A league insider ranks Houston’s depth above AFC heavyweights like Buffalo, sparking a heated debate over whether C.J. Stroud’s supporting cast can finally eclipse Josh Allen’s stardom.
The Houston Texans have spent the past few years building one of the NFL's most talented rosters, and people around the league have been taking notice. An anonymous NFL executive recently offered high praise for the Texans while speaking with The Athletic's Mike Sando, going as far as to suggest Houston might have the best overall roster in the AFC.
"I actually think the Texans might have the best roster (in the AFC)," the executive said. "I'd be tempted to put Houston above Buffalo because of that, but there is such a big difference in the quarterbacks."
That final part of the comment will certainly draw attention, particularly when comparing C.J. Stroud to Bills superstar Josh Allen. Allen has established himself as one of the league's elite quarterbacks, while Stroud enters a crucial season with plenty to prove after an up-and-down 2025 campaign. Still, the larger takeaway from the executive's assessment is just how highly Houston's roster is viewed around the NFL.
The Texans have assembled an elite defense featuring stars such as Will Anderson Jr., Derek Stingley Jr., Jalen Pitre, and Danielle Hunter. That unit has consistently been the foundation of Houston's success, and expectations remain incredibly high heading into the 2026 season.
Houston has also made a significant effort to improve its offensive supporting cast. The Texans invested heavily in upgrading the offensive line and continue to have one of the league's top wide receivers in Nico Collins. The roster also has young players expected to take important steps forward as the season progresses.
That overall depth is apparently enough for at least one NFL executive to consider putting Houston ahead of Buffalo from a roster standpoint.
The quarterback position is where the comparison becomes much more complicated. Stroud has already shown he can play at a high level, particularly during his impressive rookie season, but he has not yet reached the same consistent level as Allen. The offensive line has also been thought to be an issue.
That does not mean the Texans need Stroud to become Allen overnight. Houston's roster has been built to give its quarterback more support than ever before, particularly with a defense capable of controlling games and a revamped offense looking to become more efficient.
The anonymous executive's comments also highlight the expectations surrounding the Texans this season. Having one of the AFC's best rosters means little if the team cannot turn that talent into postseason success.
Houston appears to have the pieces necessary to compete with anyone in the conference. Now, the Texans have the opportunity to prove that the belief in their roster is more than just preseason praise.
