An NFL insider pinpoints a defensive tackle with elite accolades whose massive frame could reshape the Texans' formidable defense.
The Houston Texans have anything but a quiet offseason over the last few months. That trend continued in the 2026 NFL draft.
The Texans made a controversial move to trade up two spots to select Georgia Tech offensive lineman Keylan Ratledge. And while Houston for some had a clear need at right tackle, some were unhappy with the decision to trade up in the draft.
Rutledge may not be the biggest wild card of the Texans' 2026 selections. One writer identified a defensive draft pick that could have a wide range of outcomes in the NFL.
ESPN NFL insider DJ Bien-Aime discussed defensive tackle Kayden McDonald's wild card potential following the 2026 NFL draft. Here's what Bien Aime had to say on the top prospect.
"My take: McDonald was viewed as one of the best defensive tackles in the draft, and Houston traded up two spots to get him. He thrives on stopping the run and while that wasn't a weak spot for the Texans last season, he's a different body type as he's almost 330 pounds which makes him ideal at taking on double teams. That should help free up the linebackers to shoot running lanes and help Houston play more two-high safety looks.
Wild-card category: McDonald was named first-team All-American, Big Ten Conference defensive lineman of the year and was a finalist for the Outland Trophy (nation's top interior lineman). The Texans can always use someone with that resume after finishing with 65 tackles, nine tackles for loss and three sacks last season. That many tackles from a defensive tackle is elite, especially considering he faced double teams throughout the season."

Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn ImagesWhile only a second-round draft selection, McDonald brings a first-round resume with him from the college level to the Texans. Some had McDonald as the Texans' potential pick at No. 28 in a handful of NFL mock drafts. Houston was able to wait until the second round to add him to the team.
It's no guarantee that McDonald is a great defender right away for the Texans defense, but it is a possibility. Houston has done well in maximizing its defensive personnel and one can assume that will continue in the 2026 season. For McDonald, it could mean playing a significant role in what was the league's best defense a season ago.
Time will tell if the prospect pans out, but it may be more likely than not that the Texans made a great pick in the second round.
