With Houston mired in an 0-4 slump, C.J. Stroud signaled a dynamic offensive shift as his favorite playmaker nears a recovery from a serious leg injury.
The Houston Texans could be getting a major boost to their wide receiver room in the coming weeks, and C.J. Stroud appears to have hinted that Tank Dell is getting closer to a return.
Stroud spoke highly of the receivers currently stepping up for Houston, specifically mentioning Kayshon Boutte and the progress he has made in earning the quarterback’s trust. But the most notable part of Stroud’s comments came when he mentioned that Dell could soon be joining the group, "The guys we have are great. KB [Kayshon Boutte] has done a great job. He’s somebody I’m learning I can trust in 1 on 1 situations. Really good at tough catches. Now we’re gonna be adding Tank, definitely be helpful these next couple weeks.”
That is certainly an encouraging update for a Texans team that could use all the help it can get offensively. Dell has been working his way back from the serious leg injury he suffered during the 2024 season. His absence has been felt by the Texans, particularly when it comes to the explosiveness and big-play ability he can provide alongside Nico Collins.
Houston has had to find different answers at wide receiver, and Boutte has emerged as one of the players earning more opportunities. Stroud's comments suggest the receiver has made enough of an impression to become someone the quarterback feels comfortable relying on in contested situations.
Adding Dell to that mix would give the Texans another proven playmaker and potentially make life easier for Stroud. Even if Dell needs some time to get fully back into the rhythm of an NFL game, simply having him available could give Houston's offense another dimension.
The timing would also be significant. The Texans are off to an 0-4 start in 2026, making every upcoming game increasingly important as they attempt to climb out of the hole they have created for themselves.
Houston's offense has struggled to consistently generate enough production, and getting Dell back could provide a spark. His speed, ability to create separation and familiarity with Stroud could make him an important piece as the season moves forward.
Stroud did not provide an exact return date, but saying the Texans will be “adding Tank” and that he will be “definitely helpful these next couple weeks” sounds like a strong indication that Dell's return is approaching. For a Texans team searching for answers, getting one of its most dynamic receivers back could not come at a better time.
