Despite significant offseason moves, the Texans stick to their draft philosophy: best player available, not just need. What does this mean for Houston?
The Houston Texans are set to draft following a blockbuster trade and free agent period for the team. Despite the signings and the needs that still remain, Houston head coach Demeco Ryans insists the team's draft process will not change.
Texans writer Jared Koch of Houston Texans on SI discussed what the unchanged draft process means for the Texans moving into a pivotal NFL draft.
"While the Texans' work in free agency was able to get this roster better suited to get the 2026 campaign started off had the season kicked off today, it hasn't shifted any mindset within Ryans or the front office for what the draft will hold. They're just focused on taking the best players on the board, irrespective of need.
The idea of zeroing in on the best players available rather than focusing on need is a sentiment that has been echoed throughout the top decision-makers in the Texans' building this offseason.
Even Texans owner Cal McNair emphasized earlier in the week at the meetings in Arizona that he views taking the best player available in the draft is the best way to build a good team, further hinting as to how Houston will approach their eight selections on the board later this month."
McNair and Ryans appear to be saying all the right things ahead of the draft, but whether they will adhere to that strategy is still to be seen. The Texans do have needs to address, and many of them will probably fall to their No. 28 and 38 picks. That said, they will need to be strategic to draft the right positions at the right time if they want to ensure all needs are addressed.
Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans coaches against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the second half at NRG Stadium. Thomas Shea-Imagn ImagesOffensive and defensive line have been popular picks for the team in mock drafts for the first two rounds. The Texans have three picks in that span. That said, Houston does have a clear need to draft a right tackle regardless of what Ryans and McNair say publicly. The two leaders within the franchise are aware of that need.
The reality is that the Texans will likely draft the best player available within reason. For that reason, Ryans and McNair insist they will do what they always do.
The draft could very easily fall the Texans way this April. We'll keep an eye on whether or not Houston will be able to go with offensive tackle first or wait until the second round if a great player is still available.
