Houston has suffered another significant injury on defense, as further testing revealed defensive tackle Mario Edwards Jr. suffered a torn ACL.

Houston Texans defensive tackles Mario Edwards Jr. is officially out for the remainder of the season, as further testing revealed he suffered a torn ACL.

This is another setback for a Texans defense that has already dealt with several absences early in the season.

The 32-year-old had contributed six tackles and one sack through the team’s first three games. He also recorded two quarterback hits during that span.

Edwards provided valuable experience and depth along the interior of Houston’s defensive front.

He had spent the previous two seasons with Houston after joining the team in 2024. During his time with the Texans, he recorded 44 tackles, 4.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries across 27 games.

The timing of the injury makes the loss particularly significant for Houston. The Texans are 0-3 entering Week 4 and are coming off a game in which their defense forced three turnovers but ultimately allowed Indianapolis to drive into field-goal range late in the fourth quarter.

Houston will now have to find a way to replace Edwards' snaps as the season moves forward.

The Texans have already made their first move in response to the injury, promoting defensive end Chris Braswell from the practice squad to the active roster. Houston also signed defensive tackle Aaron Graves to its practice squad, giving the team another option to develop behind its current interior defensive linemen.

Braswell has NFL experience after spending the previous two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The former Alabama standout recorded 48 tackles, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble in 34 games with Tampa Bay.

Still, replacing a veteran like Edwards will not necessarily be as simple as replacing one player with another.

Edwards had also dealt with an injury-shortened 2025 season, when he missed time with a torn pectoral muscle and finished the year with 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He had bounced back to become part of Houston’s rotation again this season before the latest injury.

Now, his 12th NFL campaign is over.

For the Texans, the focus shifts toward finding enough production and depth along the defensive front to withstand another major loss. Houston has already been forced to navigate several injuries, and Edwards' adds another challenge as the team prepares for the remainder of the season.

With the Dallas Cowboys up next and the Texans trying to log their first victory of the season, Houston will need to avoid letting the sour news of the injury affect their preparation for Sunday.
