When C. J. Gardner-Johnson was released by the Houston Texans this week, it was a surprise to some. This was a tough decision, but one Houston feels comfortable with. But that type of move can send shock waves through the locker room, especially since there have been reports of Gardner-Johnson being a bit of an issue behind the scenes.

Given how recent this move was, players on the Texans are still being asked about their take on the situation. The most recent player to give his take on the situation is Jalen Pitre, who was a member of the secondary alongside Gardner-Johnson.

“Yeah, I was a little surprised,” said Pitre on Friday. “You know, obviously, when any of my teammates get released or let go, it’s always tough, but it’s the nature of business. It’s all about moving forward and getting this win against Tennessee.”

That’s the right mindset to have. Professional sports truly is a business. Your teammates and situation will change with time, but you have to stay focused on what you can control and what’s ahead. Getting their first win against the Titans on Sunday should be the only focus for the Texans.

Pitre also had nothing bad to say about his experience being around Gardner-Johnson.

“Not necessarily,” Pitre went on to say when asked if Gardner-Johnson was a locker room issue. “Every time I had any encounter with CJ, it was always welcoming. He always had good energy.”

While the Gardner-Johnson situation is now in the rear view mirror, it continues to be a topic. Pitre will be a primary piece in ensuring this Texans secondary can pick up the slack.
