Houston could transform C.J. Stroud’s offense by landing superstar Saquon Barkley. This bold proposal weighs heavy draft capital against the pursuit of a definitive championship window.
The Houston Texans have an opportunity to make a major statement as they look to strengthen their offense, and ESPN's Ben Solak believes Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley could be an intriguing trade target.
In a recent proposal, Solak suggested the Texans send Philadelphia a package of draft picks and running back Woody Marks in exchange for the former NFL Offensive Player of the Year. The proposed deal would see Houston give up a 2027 third-round pick, a 2027 sixth-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and Marks to bring Barkley to Houston.
It's an aggressive offer, particularly for a running back who will be 30 years old during the 2027 season. However, the Texans have reasons to consider a move that could give their offense another proven playmaker.
Solak acknowledged that a trade would be a bold decision for Philadelphia, but he pointed to general manager Howie Roseman's willingness to make difficult roster decisions before a player's production declines, "Would the Eagles really trade Barkley? It feels bold, but if there's a general manager willing to get out a year early instead of a year late on a 29-year-old running back, it's certainly Roseman."
Barkley was a major part of Philadelphia's championship push after joining the team in 2024 free agency. His explosive running ability helped transform the Eagles' offense, making him one of the league's most dangerous offensive weapons. However, Solak believes Philadelphia's long-term direction could change the way the organization views its star running back.
"When Roseman invested in Barkley in 2024 free agency, he was doing so with contention in mind -- adding a final key piece to an offense that had a dominant offensive line and dominant wide receiver play," Solak wrote. "Now, in fall 2026, with a rebuild in mind, how likely is Barkley to remain a prime player the next time the Eagles are ready for playoff football?"
For Houston, the appeal is obvious. The Texans have been searching for consistency on the ground, and Barkley would give quarterback C.J. Stroud another dynamic weapon capable of creating explosive plays. His ability to make defenders miss, break tackles and contribute as a receiver could also help take pressure off the passing game.
The cost, however, would be significant. Houston would surrender two future premium picks while moving on from Marks, who could still develop into a useful contributor. Trading for Barkley would also mean investing heavily in a position where production can decline quickly as players approach their 30s, plus, Houston already has some age at the position with David Montgomery.
Still, if the Texans believe their championship window is open, adding a proven difference-maker could be worth considering. Solak's proposal is only a hypothetical trade, not a reported negotiation, but it presents an interesting question about Houston's priorities.
The Texans would have to weigh their future draft capital against the possibility of adding one of the NFL's most explosive running backs to an offense looking for another gear.
