Christian Kirk is set to take the field for the Houston Texans this weekend, which is a huge boost for an offense that desperately needs one. Kirk isn’t necessarily a star receiver in this league, but with a relatively young and unproven receiving corps outside of Nico Collins, it’s a blessing for C.J. Stroud to have a veteran like him integrated into the rotation.
What makes this even more interesting is that Kirk’s return comes against his former team, the Jacksonville Jaguars. It’s a divisional matchup, an AFC South contest that Houston badly needs. At 0-2, the Texans aren’t just looking for their first win of the season, they’re also searching for momentum in a division race where every game and every tiebreaker can matter come December.
Kirk was asked this week about facing his former team and whether he feels like he has something to prove. His answer was simple — he’s focused on getting back on the field and contributing after missing time with injury. There’s always something extra when going up against a former team, but Kirk’s approach is all about health, impact and helping Houston win regardless of the opponent. That’s the mark of a veteran, and it’s exactly what this Texans offense needs right now.
“I think at the time you get traded away from somewhere, you feel like you need to prove something. But, for me, it’s just honestly getting back out on the field," Kirk said at practice this week. "It’s been so long since I’ve actually played in a game. So, I’m just looking forward to just getting back out there, playing with this team, and hopefully getting us back on track.”
When he’s been on the field during his career, Kirk has been productive. The bigger question has always been staying available, and that’s already been an issue in Houston after missing the start of the year. But if he can step in this weekend and even provide a modest boost, opening things up for Stroud and giving Collins a reliable complement, it could start paying dividends quickly.
The Texans are excited to have him back, and Sunday against Jacksonville is the perfect stage for Kirk to make his impact felt. Don't be surprised if he makes big plays to get Houston over the hump. He may not be a consistent 100-yard receiving threat week-to-week, but converting a third down or finding the end zone can make all the difference.
