After securing three consecutive playoff berths, DeMeco Ryans’ squad defies NFL trends with a surprisingly soft 2026 schedule, clearing a favorable path for C.J. Stroud’s championship pursuit.
The NFL schedule release always comes with a wave of reactions. Some teams groan at the gauntlet laid out before them, while others quietly exhale. This year, the Houston Texans were able to exhale a little bit.
The Texans have made the playoffs in three straight seasons under DeMeco Ryans, the Texans enter 2026 with something rare for a team of their recent pedigree: a genuinely friendly schedule. According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, "there was some good fortune for the Houston Texans, who snuck in there with the seventh-easiest schedule after getting to the playoffs for the third year in a row under coach DeMeco Ryans." That's notable company to be in, and a bit of a gift the Texans probably weren't expecting.
Context is important to note. These calculations were done based off of opponent's 2025 winning percentage. It is a decent measurement for now, but a lot can change. Plenty of teams probably thought they had an easy win once they saw the Texans were on the schedule back in 2023, and that probably did not go well for them. The NFL's scheduling system typically rewards the teams who stumbled the year before. Houston didn't stumble. They kept winning, yet somehow still landed a path that most contenders would envy.
Now, a soft schedule doesn't hand you anything. The Texans still have to show up, stay healthy, and continue building on what Ryans has constructed in Houston. C.J. Stroud is entering a pivotal stretch of his young career, and the expectations inside that locker room aren't modest. But there's no denying that the road ahead looks more manageable than what some AFC rivals will be navigating.
For a team that's been genuinely competing in the postseason over the last three years, this could be the kind of scheduling break that pushes them from playoff contender to something more. The window is open. The pieces are in place. And now the calendar is cooperating too.
Houston fans have had plenty to be excited about over the last few years, but optimism has always come with the caveat of a tough road. This season, that caveat is a little quieter. The Texans didn't need luck to get to three straight postseasons, but they'll take it. If they make another deep run in 2026, this schedule will be a footnote worth remembering.
