Houston lands a former wideout turned pass rusher. Can this unconventional signing ignite the Texans' defense and spark a career renaissance?

The Houston Texans were one of the most active teams in the NFL leading up to the legal tampering window during the 2026 offseason. Houston completed some trades and restructures, extended some key players, and re-signed players set to hit free agency. The Texans were also looking to get better once the legal tampering period began, and Houston has been relatively quiet aside from signing defensive end Dominique Robinson.

Robinson has been the only addition through free agency so far, and his deal will not become official until the new league year begins on Wednesday, when all deals can be finalized. As of now, the deals announced have been agreed to by the two sides involved, but things can change on rare occasions.

Robinson is an interesting player in the NFL. He was a fifth-round selection by the Chicago Bears in the 2022 NFL Draft. He has mostly been a rotational player throughout his career, which is what will be the case in Houston. He has recorded three sacks and 68 total tackles so far in the NFL.

What is most interesting about the defender is his football background. He attended Miami of Ohio for college, and he initially enrolled as a quarterback. He eventually switched to wide receiver to get more playing time, and now he is in the NFL as a defensive end, which had to be a bizarre transition. He did not switch to the defensive side of the ball until his senior year of college.

It is a one-year deal for Robinson, and he will get to play alongside some of the best pass rushers in the NFL. This is a great move for him and his career. Even if he does not spend a ton of time in Houston, this year will be great for his development as a player. He should learn a lot from players like Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, and even interior players like Sheldon Rankins. He will make $4 million this year, and if he puts out some good tape, he will likely be highly pursued during the 2027 offseason.

The Texans need to focus more on fixing the offense, but these depth additions on defense are also important. It is key to have quality depth so guys can rotate in and out to keep some starters' legs fresh. It will be interesting to see how Robinson pans out during his time with the Texans.
