Should the Texans draft Caleb Banks?
Caleb Banks is one of the most disputed prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft with his lengthy injury history, but his elite frame, athleticism, and impact still make him a top prospect. He’s an intriguing option for the Houston Texans and would bolster their already strong defensive line. His value would be outstanding at pick 28 if he can stay on the field.
The risk behind Banks is serious. A concern with large players is foot injuries, as the pressure being put on it is compounded by the natural force of playing. Unfortunately, he’s already been plagued by this problem. He originally hurt his foot in training camp, which caused him to sit out until week three. When Banks returned, he reaggravated the injury and missed the next 10 weeks.
Things were looking up for Banks as he dominated the Senior Bowl and had an impressive NFL Combine performance; however, reports surfaced that he once again fractured his foot while in Indianapolis. This is serious and cemented him as a risky selection because of the injuries.
Another aspect of the game that Banks struggles with is his leverage. This problem is common with large defensive tackles, as it’s tough to get lower than the lineman; however, that doesn’t make it less of a concern. This can cause him to occasionally get overpowered and make him stagnant during plays.
Despite all of this, Banks is still an enticing prospect for the Texans.
Prospects rarely contain Banks’ mix of size and athleticism. The six-foot-six, 327-pound defensive tackle is a potential three-down game-wrecker in the NFL. He has an elite first step, which helps him quickly penetrate the backfield and blow up the play. Additionally, he has violent hand usage that lets him efficiently stack and shed an opposing lineman.
It’s ill-advised for an offense to run at Banks. He’s a powerful presence who often takes two blockers to eliminate him from plays. This was evident in his limited snaps last season. He won’t rack up a staggering amount of sacks or tackles for loss, but he opens up the opportunity for his teammates to make plays.
Banks’ ability has already been established, but the fit is perfect for the Texans. Sheldon Rankins is still an impactful player, but they are lacking depth outside of him. Because of this, Banks could be a day-one starter and a dangerous presence on their defensive line.
Overall, Caleb Banks is a tempting target for the Houston Texans with his rare mix of size, athleticism, and tools. His injury concerns are serious, but the reward far outweighs the risk. He would be a fantastic addition at pick 28 and would elevate the Texans’ defensive line.
