How can the Texans help revitalize CJ Stroud and their offense during the 2026 NFL Draft?
CJ Stroud exploded onto the NFL landscape with a historic rookie season, but the road’s been rocky ever since due to issues with the offensive line, numerous injuries at wide receiver and subpar running back play. This was clear in the Houston Texans’ ineffective offense during their 2026 playoff run. To fix this, the Texans must launch “Operation Save CJ Stroud” during the 2026 NFL Draft.
Before a solution can be found, the problems must be defined.
Stroud has been catching flak for his inconsistent performances, but it’s challenging to be successful when pressure is constantly evident. Right tackle Braden Smith is the weak spot on the Texans’ offensive line; he’s capable, but not dependable. Additionally, the interior can use retooling. Wyatt Teller was added and Ed Ingram re-signed, but Teller is aging and center remains a liability. It’s pivotal that they address these positions in April.
Beyond that, Stroud needs more explosive playmakers. The Texans have an impressive receiver room, anchored by Nico Collins, Tank Dell and Jayden Higgins, but health is a problem. This trend continues at running back, where Woody Marks had an exceptional rookie season, but the depth pieces can’t stay available.
So, the Texans need to add offensive linemen and playmakers. How can they do that during the 2026 NFL Draft?
The Texans should address offensive tackle early due to a lack of depth. A common mock is Clemson right tackle Blake Miller. The former Tiger is a smooth athlete, which helps him effortlessly mirror opposing edge rushers in pass protection. Additionally, he’s played over 3,700 career snaps and hasn’t missed a game with injury. He, or any of the other tackles, would be a wise selection at pick 28.
Adding an offensive lineman gives the Texans the flexibility to select playmakers on day two. The position is irrelevant; the only important thing is giving Stroud more weapons.
Two enticing options in this range are Arkansas running back Mike Washington Jr. and Alabama receiver Germie Bernard. Washington’s elite athleticism and top-end speed would be a perfect complement to Marks, elevating their running game. Similarly, Bernard’s versatility and savvy route running would pair well with Collins, giving Stroud another reliable option.
After adding these prospects, the Texans can go several ways on day three. Obviously, some of their picks will be devoted to defense, but more offensive players shouldn’t be ruled out. It would be smart to add a depth interior offensive lineman and another weapon at receiver/tight end in this range.
If the Texans follow this blueprint, CJ Stroud will be far more consistent and effective in 2026. It’s pivotal that they retool their offense so the young quarterback can succeed. The opportunity is there; now the only question is if the Texans will capitalize.
