Elite defensive anchors can't mask Houston’s crumbling offensive line and C.J. Stroud’s sophomore slump, leaving the talented roster stuck in the middle of the NFL pack.

The Houston Texans have all the makings of a contender on paper: elite pass rushers, lockdown cornerbacks, and a receiving corps that is up and coming. But when you zoom out and evaluate the full 53-man roster, some uncomfortable truths start to emerge.

Austin Mock of The Athletic recently released his NFL roster rankings, slotting the Texans in at 14th overall. Not a bad number by any means, but for a team that many believe has a legitimate shot at a deep playoff run, sitting outside the top ten is a reality check. Here's how Mock broke it down:

"The Texans have elite edge rushers and cornerbacks, as well as tremendous upside on the interior defensive line. On offense, however, the outlook remains bleak beyond a solid group of wide receivers. Houston's offensive tackles rank 26th, its interior offensive line ranks 21st, and that's before we get into the conversation about quarterback C.J. Stroud, who has struggled since a fine rookie season in 2023."

The defense is arguably as good as anyone's. Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter anchoring the edge, elite corners on the outside, and a defensive interior with real upside — that's a unit capable of carrying a team in any matchup. If you're building a defense in Madden, you'd be pretty happy with what Houston has put together. The offense is where some worries start to arise.

A 26th-ranked offensive tackle group is not a small issue, that's a foundational problem. Protecting your quarterback and creating running lanes starts up front, and right now, Houston's offensive trenches simply aren't getting the job done at an acceptable level. Pair that with an interior offensive line ranked 21st, and you have a unit that could consistently put the skill players in difficult positions.

And then there's C.J. Stroud. The conversation around him has shifted noticeably since his dazzling rookie campaign in 2023. The flashes are still there, but the consistency hasn't followed. Whether his struggles are a product of the offensive line woes or something more concerning is a question the Texans need answered sooner rather than later.

Houston has the defensive foundation to compete with anyone, as seen over the last two seasons. But until the offensive line is upgraded and Stroud rediscovers his rookie form, the Texans will keep sitting in that frustrating middle ground — talented enough to make noise, but not quite complete enough to go all the way.
