A sudden illness for starting left tackle Aireontae Ersery threatens to leave C.J. Stroud unprotected as the winless Texans fight to save their season in Nashville.
The Houston Texans could be facing another obstacle heading into Sunday's divisional matchup against the Tennessee Titans, as starting left tackle Aireontae Ersery missed Friday's practice because of an illness.
With the Texans desperately searching for their first win of the 2026 season, the possibility of losing an important piece of the offensive line is an unwelcome development. Houston enters Week 5 with an 0-4 record after another disappointing loss, falling 34-30 to the Dallas Cowboys despite a strong offensive performance from quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Ersery's status will be worth monitoring as the Texans prepare for their trip to Nashville. Missing practice because of an illness does not automatically mean a player will be unavailable on Sunday, but the lack of participation this late in the week creates some uncertainty about whether he will be ready to go.
The former second-round pick has started all four games for Houston this season, making his availability particularly important for an offense that has struggled to find consistency. Keeping Stroud protected has been a major priority for the Texans, and losing their starting left tackle could make that challenge even more difficult.
Houston has already dealt with its share of offensive line concerns throughout the early portion of the season. The unit has been under pressure to improve its consistency, particularly with the Texans trying to establish a more reliable running game while giving Stroud enough time to operate in the pocket.
If Ersery cannot play against Tennessee, Houston would need to turn to another option at left tackle. That could force the Texans to adjust their offensive line combinations against a Titans defense looking to take advantage of any weakness up front. Even if the replacement performs adequately, changing personnel at such an important position can affect communication and continuity across the entire offensive line.
The Texans cannot afford many more setbacks as they attempt to climb out of an 0-4 hole. Sunday's matchup represents an opportunity to get their season back on track against a divisional opponent that also entered the weekend without a victory.
Stroud showed encouraging signs against Dallas, throwing for 347 yards and two touchdowns, but Houston ultimately came up short. The Texans need to build on that offensive production rather than allow another setback to derail their progress.
Ersery's illness is not necessarily a sign that he will miss Sunday's game, and his final status will be determined closer to kickoff. However, his absence from Friday's practice gives Houston another situation to monitor before facing the Titans.
With the Texans needing a win in the worst way, getting their starting left tackle back on the field would provide a welcome boost to an offense that cannot afford to lose any more stability.
