The Houston Texans have elevated a defensive back from the practice squad to the active roster for Week 1.
The Houston Texans are getting ready to begin the 2026 NFL season as they take on the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 on Sunday, and in preparation for the game, the Texans have made a roster move.
On Saturday, the Texans elevated safety George Odum from the practice squad to the active roster via standard elevation for Sunday's game, which could very well turn out to be an important move depending on how everything plays out.
Odum is a very experienced player as he is entering his ninth season in the NFL, having played for the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 2021, the San Francisco 49ers from 2022 to 2024, and then he went back to the Colts in 2025, before joining the Texans for 2026.
So far, Odum has played in 108 career games and has recorded 203 total tackles, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, three interceptions, nine pass breakups, and one safety.
Overall, Odum has proven to be a solid player in the NFL and has been able to contribute on defense as well as special teams.
For the Texans, bringing up Odum seems to be a move done for depth purposes to ensure there are enough bodies at the safety position.
Heading into Sunday, Houston has a total of five safeties, including Reed Blankenship, Calen Bullock, Jalen Pitre, Kamari Ramsey, and Odum. With that said, the Texans should be in a good spot when it comes to the safety position for the season opener.
In this season opener, Houston will have their hands full trying to stop Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who has clearly become one of the top quarterbacks in the entire NFL.
On that note, having depth in the secondary is going to be critical, especially at the safety position, because the Texans must find a way to match up with the Buffalo receivers as well as the tight ends in the passing game.
When it comes to the match ups, the Bills have several great weapons with wide receivers DJ Moore, Khalil Shakir, and Coleman, in addition to the tight end duo of Dalton Kincaid, and Dawson Knox, as well as solid running back room that has James Cook, Ray Davis, and Ty Johnson.
While the Bills have great weapons, the Texans not only have a good safety room, but they also have some very reliable corners in Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter, who have become two of the tougher corners to have success against in the entire NFL.
So, heading into Week 1, with Odum now adding to the depth in the secondary, it seems the Texans may have the defensive personnel they need to be able to have a great performance against Allen and the Bills and quite possibly start 2026 off 1-0.
