Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans gives high praise to Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow ahead of their Week 2 duel.
The Houston Texans are hoping to bounce back from their tough opening-week loss against the Buffalo Bills, but it will not be easy as Houston has to match up with the Cincinnati Bengals and quarterback Joe Burrow.
For the Texans to be able to respond and win in Week 2, it is going to take a solid performance, especially on the defensive side of the ball against Burrow and the Bengals' offense.
On that note, during Wednesday's media availability, Texans' head coach DeMeco Ryans talked about Burrow and how incredible a player he is, which is why it is so difficult to stop him.
"The Bengals are really exceptional offense. It starts all everything starts and goes through the quarterback. You talk about a guy has exceptional talent. Joe Burrow. He's one of the best quarterbacks I've watched and studied from the standpoint of his accuracy, ball placement, their horizontal spacing as an offense, and how he's able to really, you know, throw the ball around wherever he wants to. You know, he can place the ball, you know, on the sideline, on the wherever he wants to put it, he'll put it there," Ryans said.
As Ryans talked about, Burrow is one of the more talented quarterbacks in the NFL, and in particular, Burrow's ability to place the ball exactly where he wants, even against tight defensive coverage, is something that sets him apart and makes him a truly elite quarterback.
Additionally, the Bengals' spacing on offense was also something that Ryans mentioned, and that Burrow can throw the ball all over the field and, once again, place the ball exactly where he wants to put it. With the ball placement that Burrow consistently demonstrates, it becomes very difficult for a defense to stop.
While Burrow's ball placement is dangerous on its own, he also has dynamic weapons, including running back Chase Brown, tight end Mike Gesicki, and a great duo of wide receivers in JaMar Chase and Tee Higgins. With these dynamic weapons, Burrow has demonstrated the ability to completely shred defenses.
Now, looking at the Texans' side of things, it is pretty clear that this Houston defense will need to have a very detailed game plan to be able to slow down Burrow, but also great execution of the game plan, because otherwise Burrow could put Houston in big trouble.
When it comes to the Texans being able to execute the game plan, arguably the biggest piece of it is going to be Houston's ability to get pressure on Burrow to get him out of rhythm and force him to make tough throws on the run.
Burrow does have the ability to make throws on the run, however, with Houston's star edge rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter, the Texans should be able to not only get pressure but also keep Burrow in the pocket and limit his ability to extend plays.
If the Texans can limit Burrow's ability to make throws in the pocket and in rhythm and instead make him uncomfortable in the pocket, Houston could have an opportunity to have a great day on defense and possibly get back in the win column.
So as the Texans head into their Week 2 matchup with the Bengals, it will be interesting to see if DeMeco Ryans, defensive coordinator Matt Burke, and this defense can get pressure on Burrow, and if they can, it could very well mean getting back in the win column to get on track for what seems to be a very competitive 2026 NFL season.
