Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans gives some insight on what he saw on tape from newly acquired wide receiver Kayshon Boutte.
The Houston Texans enter the 2026 season with an opportunity to take a step forward and possibly make a run at winning the AFC, but in order to do that the offense will need to step up.
To help the offense take the next step, general manager Nick Caserio made a trade to acquire New England Patriots wide receiver Kayshon Boutte. In the trade, the Patriots sent over Boutte, while Houston traded away safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick.
While the Texans did need to take a step forward offensively, the main reason Houston went on to make the trade was because wide receiver Jayden Higgins tore his ACL which did a lot of damage to the depth at wide receiver.
With the acquisition of Boutte, the Texans got a receiver who could definitely contribute right away on the perimeter. On that note, during Wednesday's media availability, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans explained what he saw in Boutte on tape and why Houston wanted to bring him in.
"What I saw from Kayshon in New England. I saw a guy who's very competitive at the catch point, right? Very strong hands, contested catches. He's coming down with the ball nine times out of 10. So, I saw that in his play and that really stood out to me," said Ryans.
As Ryans talked about, Boutte's ability to go up and make contested catches with his 6-0 and 197-pound frame is something that has helped Boutte to develop into a productive wide receiver and also appears to be a key reason why the Texans wanted to acquire him.
During the 2025 season, Boutte had one of the best years of his career so far as he tallied 33 receptions for 551 yards, six touchdowns, 27 first downs, and averaged 16.7 yards per catch.
Last year with the Patriots, Boutte was one of the top options, which enabled him to be productive in the regular season as well as in the postseason.
In the 2025 postseason, the Texans and Patriots matched up, and in that game, Boutte made a very impressive touchdown grab over cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., which was something that could have put Boutte on Houston's radar.
With Boutte now in the Texans' offense, he provides another weapon for quarterback C.J. Stroud, who is still negotiating his contract with Houston and will need a solid year to prove he can be a franchise quarterback.
On the perimeter, the Texans already have their top option in Nico Collins, in addition to Xavier Hutchinson, Jaylin Noel, Dalton Schultz at tight end, and Tank Dell returning from injury. With several weapons already on the perimeter, it does appear that Boutte could have the opportunity to line up on the outside and use his physical frame to make contested catches and generate explosive plays for Houston.
So heading into the 2026 season, if Boutte can earn major snaps in the wide receiver rotation, he could have a key impact by making contested catches consistently, and if he does, this Texans passing game could become much more productive than a season ago and help Boutte to once again have a career year.
