How will Keylan Rutledge impact the Texans' offense?

The Houston Texans invested heavily in the trenches during the 2026 NFL Draft by adding Georgia Tech offensive lineman Keylan Rutledge at pick 26. Although it wasn’t a flashy pick, this addition will have major implications next season. But, just how much? Below, I’ll dive into what fans can expect from Rutledge and how he will impact CJ Stroud and the rest of the Texans’ offense.

First off, it’s important to note that Rutledge is projected to start at center for the Texans, despite playing guard in college. Because of this, it’s rational to expect some turbulence early in his career. It will take time to adjust both to NFL-level competition and an entirely new position. However, Rutledge’s skill set projects well to center and should help ease the transition.

The six-foot-four, 330-pound rookie will be most impactful as a run blocker. The Texans had a mediocre rushing attack in 2025, ranking 22nd in the NFL with 108.9 yards per game. The inability to provide a consistent threat put all the pressure on CJ Stroud’s shoulders. Additionally, most of the struggles from this stemmed from the interior offensive line. Fortunately for them, Rutledge will thrive in this area and instantly improve the group.

Georgia Tech has a run-heavy scheme. As a result, he has ample experience paving a path for the running back. Rutledge is a mauler, containing the mentality, athleticism, and technique to be a dominating presence. He plays with excellent leverage, which helps him easily displace defenders and create a lane.

Another key issue for the Texans was their pass blocking, leaving Stroud minimal time to operate in the pocket. Rutledge still needs to improve in this area, but it is already an improvement. He has the foundation to be a stellar pass protector, flashing outstanding footwork and hand usage. However, he needs to get more consistent. This is largely because he wasn’t asked to block for an extended period in college. Most of the time, it was one read before the quarterback took off. He needs to develop at this, but will already give Stroud extra time.

As a result of these aforementioned traits, fans can expect the Texans’ offense to see a noticeable improvement next year. The run game is likely to take a massive step forward, and CJ Stroud should be given extra time to operate. The defense is already elite, and now the offense is moving towards that. Don’t be surprised if the addition of Keylan Rutledge can quietly turn them from an AFC South contender to a Super Bowl hopeful.
