Tennessee fell to 0-3 after a gut-wrenching end-zone interception. Robert Saleh breaks down Cam Ward’s costly decision and the missed opportunity to secure a late-game comeback victory.
The Tennessee Titans had another gut-wrenching loss in Week 3.
The New York Giants weren't the only ones against the Titans. The weather was just awful.
It rained the entire game with high winds.
The Titans learned just how deterring the conditions could be on the opening kickoff. Chimere Dike tried to dive for more yards and fumbled the ball.
After struggling all day, the Titans' offense finally started to get life down 12-0. Cam Ward led the offense down the field and threw a touchdown pass to Wan'Dale Robinson, making it 12-7 with under seven minutes remaining.
The defense needed a big stop to give the Titans a chance of winning. The Giants' offense had a 3rd-and-4 just outside of field goal range.
Jameis Winston's pass was deflected by John Franklin-Myers to get the stop. The Giants kept the offense on the field to try to draw the Titans offside.
It didn't work, and the Titans started their final drive on their own 28-yard line rather than the eight-yard line after a 15-yard fair-catch interference penalty.
The Titans continued to move the chains and get closer to potentially winning their first game under Robert Saleh. Tennessee got inside the New York 10-yard line with under 30 seconds left and two timeouts remaining.
On 1st-and-Goal at the Giants' seven-yard line, Cam Ward rolled out to the left and tried to fit a pass to Elic Ayomanor in the back of the end zone. It wasn't high enough and was intercepted by Jevon Holland, ending the game.
The pass wasn't Ward's best, but it looked like he had plenty of room to run for what could've been a go-ahead touchdown, or maybe he could've just gotten the offense closer to the end zone if he'd been tackled in bounds.
As a result, the Titans lost and are now 0-3.
After the game, it was expected that Saleh would be asked about the interception. He agreed that Ward could've been better with the football in that situation.
"Yeah, you know, he's out there in the open," Saleh said. "Just be smarter with the football. We've got two timeouts left, and it's 1st-and-goal on the eight; we're gonna score. You don't need to force it in that situation, and unfortunately it happened."
Up until that point, Ward hadn't thrown an interception all season. It's unfortunate that his first interception of the year cost the Titans the game.
The Titans are staying on the road in Week 4.
There will be another reunion for the Titans, as they face the Baltimore Ravens and Derrick Henry for the first time since he was let go by the organization at the end of the 2023 season.
