Muffed returns, defensive lapses, and a stagnant offense spoiled the start of a new era in Tennessee as New York dominated every phase during a disappointing home opener.
Tennessee Titans fans, we've officially made it to the regular season.
The New York Jets came to town, and we finally got to see this team play a meaningful football game. Robert Saleh had a chance for revenge against his old team.
The Titans won the toss and deferred but couldn't get the kickoff right. Joey Slye's first kickoff of the year went out of bounds, and the Jets started with the ball on their own 40-yard line.
The Jets started with good field position on their opening drive, and the Titans' defense didn't look much better than it did in the preseason.
New York's offense marched down the field and was able to score on the opening drive on a jet sweep to Kenyon Sadiq.
The offense could hardly find any rhythm in the first half. The Titans managed to get three points on a 42-yard field goal from Slye. Other than that, they looked pretty lifeless.
The team definitely had first-game jitters. At the same time, it felt like the Titans were just shy of hitting on big plays.
Special teams had more blunders, as Chimere Dike had a player blocked into him and went into the medical tent. Then, on the next return he fielded, he muffed it, and the Jets got the ball back.
Anthony Hill Jr. was one of the few bright spots. He started in place of the injured Cedric Gray and had 11 total tackles, which was the most by a Titans rookie in the first half of their debut since 2000.
There was a lot to fix from the first half, but somehow the Titans were only down 10-3 and got the ball back to start the second half.
The Titans didn't make the most of the opportunity and quickly gave the ball back to the Jets on a three-and-out. The Jets then took the ball down and scored on their opening drive of the second half, increasing their lead to 17-3.
The defense held up in the second half. The Jets almost scored another touchdown, but the Titans made a big stop and forced them to settle for a field goal to make it 20-3
It's a shame the offense just couldn't get going, given how well the defense played in the second half. The Jets only added field goals in the second half to take a 23-3 lead in the fourth.
The Titans lost 23-10 in Saleh's debut. They scored their only touchdown in garbage time on a touchdown pass to Elic Ayomanor.
Cam Ward finished with 140 passing yards and one touchdown, but the downside was he completed 19-of-32 passes and the passing attack was a non-factor for most of the game.
At the end of the day, the Titans weren't the more physical team. The Jets beat the Titans in all phases of the game.
The Titans take on the Philadelphia Eagles next week at home. The Titans are going to have a lot to talk about and work on ahead of the next game.
