By curbing rookie-year turnover struggles and mastering Brian Daboll’s new scheme, the Titans quarterback has transformed his decision-making to solidify his standing with a new coaching staff.
The Tennessee Titans are 0-2, but we've seen a very positive sign from Cam Ward so far.
Ward has 323 passing yards and one touchdown through two games and no interceptions.
His lack of turnovers wasn't always the case, especially during the first half of his rookie season. From Weeks 1-9, Ward had 1,760 passing yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions.
Brian Callahan was fired after the Week 6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Ward then slowly started to improve after being mentored by interim head coach Mike McCoy. Ward then threw 10 touchdowns with one interception in the second half of the year.
This offseason, he's had to go through a little bit of a reset.
There's the new coaching staff, and Ward has also had to learn a new offense led by offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
Still, throughout all those changes under Robert Saleh, Ward hasn't had issues turning the football over. Ward looked very composed on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, completing 13-of-20 passes for 183 passing yards and one touchdown.
He wasn't afraid to take checkdowns and made sure to use his legs when the game called for it. Ward's patience was rewarded with two rushing touchdowns.
Even though the Titans lost 24-20, what we saw from Ward was very encouraging regarding his development. After looking out of sorts against the New York Jets, Ward was locked in during Week 2.
The Titans still don't have a win yet heading into Week 3. Regardless, Saleh has been very pleased with Ward's dedication to limiting turnovers.
At Wednesday's press conference, he said that Ward has earned trust because of that.
"Cam's deliberate in that regard," Saleh said. "He's kind of earned the right to be trust with regards to taking care of the football. I mean, takeaways and turnovers is the number one indicator for wins and losses through the history of football, and having an offense that takes care of the ball to the level we have, you know, hopefully that continues."
Ward will get to see his first NFL head coach on Sunday. Callahan is now the quarterbacks coach of the New York Giants.
Other former Titans coaches now at the Giants include Frank Bush, Tim Kelly and Denard Wilson. Wilson is familiar with Ward, too. He was the defensive coordinator on Callahan's staff at the Titans last year.
Wilson is now the DC for the Giants on John Harbaugh's staff.
Bush was the linebackers coach at the Titans from 2024-25 and now coaches the inside linebacker for the Giants. Kelly was the passing game coordinator at the Titans in 2022 and was then promoted to OC in 2023.
Titans fans will be interested to see how Ward and Callahan react on Sunday. Ward credited Callahan with being a player's coach and being very upfront with the team.
The two will meet face to face for the first time since last year. Kickoff is at noon CT on CBS this Sunday.
