Despite a crucial divisional win, Tennessee’s signal-caller continues to struggle with consistency. Robert Saleh weighs in on Ward's underwhelming stat line and the urgent need for offensive efficiency.
Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward has had his moments this year, but it's mostly been underwhelming.
He looked like a different player in the season opener compared to what we saw towards the end of his rookie season. He finished with 140 passing yards and one touchdown. Ward completed 19 of 32 passing attempts.
Ward's only touchdown came in garbage time.
He looked more decisive in the Week 2 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He had 183 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns. He only missed seven passes during the game.
Then, the offense as a whole took a step back in Week 3. The rainy conditions weren't ideal for passing. Ward had 181 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. He completed 23 of 36 passes.
Ward had his best game of the year in the Baltimore Ravens loss. He had a season-high 222 passing yards, with one touchdown and one interception.
The Titans quarterback regressed again in Week 5, with 23 of 36 passes completed, 170 passing yards, and an interception.
Ward did enough to manage the game on Sunday, but he still left a lot to be desired. His final stat line was 102 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. He went 11-of-22 on passing attempts.
Robert Saleh shared what the win over the Colts could do for the team going forward, but what did the head coach think it could do for Ward's confidence for the remainder of the season?
After the win, Saleh answered. At the end of the day, Saleh wasn't too high or low on Ward after the win. He gave Ward credit where credit was due but still noted that he didn't play a perfect game.
"It could do anything, you know, but like I said, the biggest thing is relief," Saleh said. "We need to stack these days. We need to continue to build on all this stuff. I thought Cam did a lot of good things. Things again, he could have done better. But, you know, I would love to sit here and say, gosh, we're going to go on a big run. But what it guarantees us is an opportunity to get to work tomorrow. That's all it does."
Did Ward manage the game well enough to make sure the Titans won? Yes. However, the quarterback also struggled in the first half and didn't throw his lone touchdown pass of the game until the fourth quarter.
The touchdown was much needed and gave the Titans confidence, but you would still like to see Ward run the offense more efficiently at the start of games. We've seen this from Ward at times this season, when he looks like a different player in the fourth quarter.
It would be good to see Ward play this way for an entire game rather than scoring only in the final quarter.
The Ward we saw in the entire game against the Eagles hasn't really shown up in the last few weeks. We've seen flashes of that player, but Ward has been inconsistent for most of the year.
We'll see if this win elevates Ward's play as the team heads into the meat of its schedule. The Titans have a chance to keep things going against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
Kickoff is set for noon CT on CBS.
