General Manager Mike Borgonzi continues reshaping the secondary by adding former UFL standout Corey Mayfield Jr. amid a roster shuffle and a looming six-game suspension for Nazeeh Johnson.
There has been a trend with the Tennessee Titans lately on defense.
Bringing in players to bolster the secondary has been a priority lately. The Titans signed undrafted free agent out of Arkansas Hudson Clark before releasing him to make room for cornerback Derrick Canteen and defensive linemen Khalen Saunders and Laki Tasi.
Cornerback Mario Goodrich was also added to the mix.
Before that, the Titans added former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Nazeeh Johnson. Johnson has since been handed a six-game suspension by the NFL for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
On Monday, the Titans signed their fifth defensive back since training camp began at the end of July. Titans insider Jim Wyatt reported that the team was signing Corey Mayfield Jr.
The Titans waived UDFA linebacker Sean Brown to make room for the move. Brown went undrafted out of N.C. State in April.
With Brown gone, the remaining UDFAs on the Titans are Jalen McMurray, Mani Powell, Bishop Fitzgerald, Tyren Montgomery, Hank Beatty, Rasheed Miller, Aamil Wagner, Matt Lauter and Dominic Richardson.
Mayfield played college football at UTSA from 2018-2022. He had a great season in his final year of eligibility, recording 64 total tackles, six TFLs, three sacks and three interceptions.
Former Titans UDFA Shad Banks also played at UTSA, but they weren't there at the same time. Banks was waived on Aug. 7 for linebacker Dominique Hampton.
Mayfield went undrafted in 2023 and signed with the Baltimore Ravens. He was waived at the beginning of that season and decided to try his hand at the UFL.
He played for the San Antonio Brahmas for two years and then returned to the NFL, where he tried out for the San Francisco 49ers this offseason.
Mayfield is the son of former NFL player Corey Mayfield, who played for the 49ers (1992), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1992), New Orleans Saints (1994), Jacksonville Jaguars (1995) and Pittsburgh Steelers (1997).
This move may be related to the recent news of Johnson's suspension. Johnson was already familiar with General Manager Mike Borgonzi, as they had been at the Chiefs at the same time.
It's uncertain whether the Titans will plan to keep Johnson now that he will be forced to miss the first six games of the regular season. He had a decent chance of making the roster, but the team may want to release him and give someone else another shot at being on the 53-man roster.
Something to watch for is whether the Titans opt to release Johnson following the recent signing of Mayfield.
