Could Sam Leavitt be the future quarterback for the Vikings?

LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt’s elite improvisational ability, rocket of an arm, and clutchness make him a top quarterback in the nation; however, he must be more consistent. If he does, he will be an enticing target for the Minnesota Vikings in the 2027 NFL Draft.

Before diving into Leavitt, it’s important to note the goal of summer scouting. This article isn’t intended to declare him the perfect prospect for the Vikings. It’s far too early to say anything like that; plenty will change. Instead, it’s meant to name him as a potential fit that fans should pay attention to. He has the talent and is someone worth knowing who could resurface in April.

Leavitt is a constant big-play threat with his exceptional arm and agility. He’s evasive in the backfield and is challenging to bring down, which helps him extend the play and make something out of nothing. Additionally, he has a cannon of an arm that’s capable of hitting receivers in stride 60+ yards. He puts ample velocity on his passes and can fit throws inside of tight windows.

Beyond this, one of Leavitt’s most valuable traits is his poise, particularly late in games. He doesn’t get flustered and rises to the moment, frequently playing his best in the 4th quarters of games. He has already had multiple game-winning or tying drives; a team is never out of the running with Leavitt. This ability will excite NFL teams and drive up his stock.

Despite these qualities, Leavitt isn’t a perfect prospect, particularly because of his inconsistencies. He’s shown flashes of impeccable accuracy, but it can be all over the place. As a result, he can put his receivers in harm's way by throwing an errant pass over the middle. Similarly, he has moments of reading the field well, but can often hesitate and lock in on one read.

The aforementioned traits should intrigue the Vikings because of their need at quarterback. They have two starting-caliber options: Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy. However, both of their careers have been plagued by inconsistencies and they can’t be relied upon for an entire season. As a result, adding another quarterback this offseason to be their future signal caller would be wise.

If they do this, Sam Leavitt should be at the top of their list. His superb improvisational ability, outstanding arm talent, and clutchness make him a premier prospect that could be a future star in the NFL.
