Should fans be worrid about Cam Coleman's average production?

Texas wide receiver Cam Coleman was the nation’s highest-graded transfer in 2026; however, things haven’t gone as planned in Austin, TX. He’s struggled to develop chemistry with Arch Manning and hasn’t had his anticipated breakout season. Still, he’s a first-round target for the Minnesota Vikings in the 2027 NFL Draft.

Coleman, the former five-star recruit, spent his first two seasons at Auburn, totaling 1,306 combined yards and 13 touchdowns in a dysfunctional Tigers offense. Following this, he transferred to Texas, where he was expected to dominate and form a dangerous tandem with Arch Manning.

Sadly, this hasn’t happened yet. Coleman’s been fine statistically with 20 receptions for 336 yards and six touchdowns through seven games, but hasn’t kept pace with other top receivers.

However, the stats aren’t indicative of Coleman’s performance. The six-foot-three, 201-pound player is still worthy of a top-15 pick. He simply isn’t getting the targets and hasn’t connected with Manning yet. Expect their chemistry to continue to grow throughout the season.

Coleman’s A-list skill is his athleticism. He has blazing speed and glides down the field with his long strides. He’s a quick accelerator and stops on a dime. Beyond this, his staggering physicality and body control help him dominate contested catches and bully defenders.

Then, his explosiveness after the catch (RAC) is on display. He beats defenders with both elusiveness and power, juking them in open space, then running through arm tackles. He’s a threat on the screen game and turns mediocre plays into game-changing moments.

Coleman is a great route runner for his size. Six-foot-three receivers won’t ever be route artists; more to come on that, but he’s efficient in his breaks and has excellent IQ, helping him stem defenders and attack their leverage.

The biggest concern for Coleman, outside of the lack of production, is his route running refinement. I’ve already mentioned how it’s for his size, but he’s not perfect. He has a limited route tree and rounds his cuts. He won’t ever be a route artist, but proving he can create separation with it is the missing piece from his evaluation.

Still, the Vikings should be heavily interested in Coleman. Justin Jefferson is a bona fide star, and Jordan Addison is a great wide receiver two, but his off-the-field issues are concerning. Additionally, they lack depth behind them, as Jauan Jennings hasn’t panned out. Ensuring the unit’s future by adding Coleman would be wise and give their quarterback, whoever it may be, the tools to thrive.

Although Cam Coleman’s production has been subpar, he’s worthy of a first-round pick. His elite athleticism, dominance in contested catches, and RAC ability make him a future star in the NFL.
