Kyler Murray aims to ignite Minnesota’s offense against winless Miami, as the Vikings' elite defense looks to secure a perfect 4-0 start before a crucial divisional stretch.

The Minnesota Vikings have found a way to start 3-0 despite an inconsistent offense, and Sunday gives them a matchup they simply cannot afford to waste. Minnesota returns home to face an 0-3 Miami Dolphins team whose record looks ugly but comes with important context, as every loss has come against an opponent that is still undefeated. With Kyler Murray getting another week to settle into the offense and the Vikings defense playing at an elite level, Minnesota has a clear opportunity to remain perfect through the first month of the season.

Game Outlook

The Vikings have been one of the NFL’s more interesting teams through three weeks because they have continued winning without consistently playing their best football offensively. Murray missed significant time early in the season, forcing Carson Wentz into action, and even after Murray returned, there has understandably been an adjustment period as he builds chemistry within a new offense.

The good news is that Minnesota has not needed its offense to be spectacular because the defense has consistently carried the load. The Vikings have made scoring extremely difficult for opponents and have given the offense room to figure things out without every possession feeling like it needs to end in points. That formula has been enough to produce a 3-0 start, and it should once again give Minnesota a significant advantage against Miami.

The Dolphins are winless, but their schedule deserves some context. Miami has lost to Las Vegas, San Francisco and Kansas City, and all three entered Week 4 undefeated. That does not mean the Dolphins are secretly one of the NFL’s best teams, but it does suggest Minnesota should not treat this like an automatic victory simply because of the records.

Still, this is exactly the type of game the Vikings need to take care of if they want to compete for the NFC North. Minnesota is at home, has the better defense and enters as a significant favorite. With Murray getting another full week of practice and game preparation, this should also be an opportunity for the offense to take a noticeable step forward.

The Vikings do not necessarily need Murray to carry them Sunday. They need him to continue getting comfortable, protect the football and create enough explosive plays to complement what the defense is doing. If the offense can become even average while the defense maintains its early-season level, Minnesota becomes a difficult team for anyone to deal with.

There is also a larger-picture element here. A 4-0 start would give the Vikings significant early momentum before they head back on the road in Week 5. Losing at home as a heavy favorite to an 0-3 Miami team, however, would immediately become the type of result Minnesota could regret later if the NFC North race comes down to a game or two.

This should be a Vikings win. Miami may be better than its record suggests, but Minnesota has shown much more through the opening month and should have enough on both sides of the ball to control this matchup.

Betting Odds

  • Spread: Vikings -9.5 (-113)
  • Moneyline: Vikings -550
  • Over/Under: 38.5

Following this contest, the Vikings will travel to New Orleans for a Week 5 matchup against the Saints. Minnesota would love to head into that road game at 4-0 after taking care of a matchup it is heavily favored to win at home.
