Kyler Murray got Minnesota to 5-0 after beating New Orleans in Week 5.
The Minnesota Vikings remain one of the most dominant teams in the NFL this season, moving to 5-0 with a 23-13 road victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon. It wasn’t a blowout, and the offense wasn’t firing on all cylinders from start to finish, but Minnesota continues to find ways to win. The Vikings beat a Saints team that’s better than its record would suggest and remain firmly in control of the NFC North through five weeks.
While the offense had its ups and downs, quarterback Kyler Murray put together his best performance of the season, completing 24 of 30 passes for 229 yards and a touchdown. Murray also made an impact with his legs, rushing seven times for 54 yards and showcasing what makes him such a dynamic dual-threat quarterback.
The return of Justin Jefferson was also felt in this contest, as the superstar receiver made his way back from an ankle injury and finished with six receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown. His 15-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter gave Minnesota a 13-7 lead and helped swing momentum back in the Vikings’ favor.
Minnesota actually trailed 7-6 entering halftime following a relatively quiet offensive first half. Running back Aaron Jones lost a fumble in the second quarter, which ultimately helped set up a touchdown drive for New Orleans. The Vikings were able to stay within striking distance thanks to a pair of field goals from Will Reichard.
The second half also featured another costly Vikings fumble, this time by Myles Price, which Saints safety Jonas Sanker returned 87 yards for a touchdown. That tied the game at 13, but Minnesota’s offense responded when it mattered most.
Jones found the end zone on an eight-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, putting the Vikings back in front. Reichard then connected on another field goal to extend Minnesota’s advantage to 10 points.
Jones finished with 113 rushing yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, overcoming his early mistake to play a significant role in the victory.
Ultimately, it was the Vikings’ defense that remained consistent throughout the contest. New Orleans managed just 142 total yards, while quarterback Tyler Shough threw for only 96 yards and two interceptions. In fact, all 13 of the Saints’ points came as a direct result of Minnesota’s offensive turnovers, including the defensive touchdown.
Still, the Vikings have plenty to feel good about heading into their bye week. At 5-0, there’s not much more Minnesota could have hoped for through its first five games.
The Vikings will return to action on October 25 when they host the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7.
