Jefferson demands more from Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy, highlighting a critical need for offensive improvement and a stepping-up signal caller.

The Minnesota Vikings were not good enough on offense last season. Star wide receiver Justin Jefferson is not hiding from it.

Jefferson spoke candidly on where the Vikings need to improve, but he did not shy away from discussing the Minnesota quarterback situation. The star receiver shared of 2025 Vikings starting signal caller J.J. McCarthy, "He's gotta step it up a little bit."

The candor may not be universally appreciated, but it is not wrong. Depending on the metric, McCarthy was one of the most underperforming quarterbacks of the century last season. In the final three games, the young quarterback improved his overall season, but there was still something to be desired even after the improvement.

Vikings Territory's K. Joudry discussed what Jefferson had to say. Here was Joudry's take on the exchange with the media.

"Last season, J.J. McCarthy needed to be a game manager. Too often, McCarthy failed in that pursuit. Now, there’s a pretty good case to be made that Minnesota did the young fella no favors. Tasking him with adjusting his mechanics during the season looked foolish in real time and even more after some hindsight. Worse yet, there wasn’t enough willingness to lean on the run, to play small ball as the 22-year-old quarterback got acclimated.

Nevertheless, McCarthy does need to step up. Excuses can be made but seeing Justin Jefferson play in all seventeen games while just barely clearing 1,000 yards is an indication of how bad the quarterback position got. Much of the issue was injury — at a couple points, undrafted rookie QB3 Max Brosmer had to play — but there were broader performance problems."

The fact that Jefferson narrowly reached the 1,000-yard mark may not seem like a big deal until you consider his stats from the rest of his career. Jefferson's rookie season was more productive than last year, and much of his struggles revolved around McCarthy's inability to get him the football.

McCarthy will need to step it up if he wants to be successful on the field, but the Vikings may not need him to step up to improve their win-loss record. Minnesota looks to have fixed the quarterback position by adding free agent quarterback Kyler Murray to the fold. Even so, the onus is one McCarthy to prove worthy of his Top 10 draft pick over the next few seasons.

Jefferson is right. McCarthy does need to step up. The Minnesota quarterback will look to translate his strong offseason to success on the field should he get his chance in 2026.
