New York Times analysis suggests Minnesota will pursue a free agent quarterback. McCarthy's struggles necessitate competition and potential insurance for the Vikings' offense.

Will the Minnesota Vikings pursue a quarterback in free agency? The New York Times thinks so. Alec Lewis shares that the Vikings will need to look elsewhere at quarterback.

Lewis says that while Minnesota's starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy is not the only reason the Vikings have been unable to generate offense, he is a significant contributing factor. The Vikings need a quarterback who can lift the franchise, not one whose play is tied to perfect conditions.

"McCarthy is not solely to blame, but success in the NFL is more tied to the quarterback’s performance than anything else. He has yet to acclimate to NFL speed. His mechanical inconsistencies will require intensive offseason work. Yet neither is a disqualifier in the long term. If he can stay healthy over these next five games, he’ll have every opportunity to generate hope for his long-term viability into 2026 and beyond."

Minnesota starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy's struggles have perhaps even necessitated that the Vikings look elsewhere. His -0.45 expected points added ranks him second-worst ahead of former Raiders quarterback Jamarcus Russell since 2000 among 252 qualifying quarterbacks.

"At this point, though, it’s doubtful that even the most optimistic outcome of the five-game sample will sway the Vikings from shopping in that all-too-familiar aisle. With O’Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah entering their fifth season without a playoff win, and with superstar receiver Justin Jefferson’s frustrations increasing, the Vikings are going to need insurance at quarterback — someone to compete with McCarthy, at the bare minimum."

Lewis shared a few options for the Vikings. Among them, that the team could pursue the likes of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones or San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones. Lewis floated the potential of pursuing other veteran players like Aaron Rodgers, Jimmy Garoppolo and the all too familiar former Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins.

While the Vikings are trying to get out of the rent-a-quarterback business, when J.J. McCarthy is not performing adding a free agent quarterback becomes almost unavoidable.

The Vikings have been committed to developing McCarthy after investing a high draft pick in the former Michigan Wolverines quarterback. That said, there's a difference in being committed and putting all eggs in one basket. It appears the Vikings are not aiming to do that, and with an offensive mind like Kevin O'Connell as head coach, the team will want to maximize his scheme while it has the roster around the quarterback to do so.

We'll monitor who the team plans to pursue over the offseason.
