Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is a polarizing player. He has his fair share of critics. Nevertheless, Murray is a popular quarterback in Minnesota.
The Vikings are looking to find a challenger to current starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy to breathe life into the Minnesota offense. Some have interpreted their interest in quarterbacks as a search for competition for McCarthy.
The reality is, if they're serious about improving their chances on the field the Vikings will need to find a difference maker at the position. Minnesota needs someone to take the reins of the quarterback spot for 2026, though McCarthy could be the starter for 2027 and beyond.
Murray stands as someone who could settle the quarterback position beyond 2026.
Enzo Flojo of Clutch Points projected what it might take to bring Murray to Minnesota. Flojo shared the trade suggestion.
"The cleanest structure looks like this:
The Vikings receive Kyler Murray and a 2027 fourth-round pick.
The Cardinals receive Minnesota’s 2026 second-round pick, a 2027 third-round pick, and quarterback JJ McCarthy.
This framework balances risk and reward for both sides without mortgaging Minnesota’s future.
For Arizona, the financial relief is immediate and substantial. Trading Murray before June 1 frees roughly $34.7 million in 2026 cap space. It also removes the long-term commitment attached to his contract. This allows the Cardinals to pivot cleanly under their current regime.
In return, they acquire a young quarterback with upside and at a manageable cost. McCarthy could compete with a bridge veteran such as Jacoby Brissett or serve as depth behind their No. 3 overall selection. Add in additional draft capital, and Arizona regains flexibility in a rebuild that stalled in 2025. It’s not about recouping every ounce of talent but about resetting the books."

For starters, the Vikings' already struggling salary cap is a concern. The team is rumored to plan to bring back tight end T.J. Hockenson who owns one of the highest cap hits among tight ends. Minnesota also stands over $40 million over the salary cap. Uncertainty over Murray's health could play a role, but the quarterback has been mostly healthy over his NFL career.
The Cardinals likely are not eager to give up a good quarterback like Murray either which could complicate the trade.
Despite it all, there's a possibility that Murray will be a Minnesota Viking in 2026. We'll see if it all comes to fruition over the next few months.
