Kyler Murray's future is uncertain. Could a disgruntled Justin Jefferson demand a blockbuster trade, creating a true Minnesota nightmare?
All is well in Minnesota entering the 2026 NFL draft. The Vikings, we think, have a franchise quarterback in new signal caller Kyler Murray.
Murray comes in after he and the Arizona Cardinals parted ways following a multi-year stint as starting quarterback in Arizona. Hopes are high for the star quarterback who has virtually always been productive when given a full season of play uninterupted by injury. Despite the confidence that he will work out, however, there are no guarantees.
The return of Murray for 2027 is contingent on the 2026 season going well for both he and the Vikings. Murray's contract is only for one season, and should something go wrong, he can always opt to find another team for the foreseeable future after the upcoming season.
Some view the above situation as the worst-case scenario for the Vikings in 2026. It could go much deeper than that. Max Dible of Heavy discussed what could make it even more complicated for Minnesota after this year. He wrote on the possibility that Jefferson could ask for a trade. Here's what Dible had to say on the topic.
"Jefferson probably would have to ask out of Minnesota to get any real traction on a trade, and he wouldn’t likely go for less than two first-round picks if a deal ever materialized.
Across 94 regular-season games over his six-year professional career, Jefferson has tallied 579 receptions for 8,480 yards and 42 touchdowns. Wideout is now a premium position, and the league pays the top receivers as such, alongside quarterback, pass-rusher and offensive tackle.
Jefferson has yet to make any waves with regards to wanting a new home, but there were obvious moments of frustration for the wideout last season amid the team’s transition to second-year quarterback JJ McCarthy, which television cameras caught on the field and sidelines."

Having already accomplished several personal milestones, the player's perspective could be switching to more team-first goals like winning a Super Bowl.
Whether or not it would get to the point Jefferson asked for a trade is up for debate. The former LSU receiver is a team player. That said, he's also a winner and would like to see his team demand excellence.
It's uncertain how much of a possibility it could get to this point. The likelihood is Murray and Jefferson have a great season in 2026. Nevertheless, it's fair to ask what will happen if things don't go according to plan.
