O'Connell's choices define Minnesota's draft, shaping his future as QB decisions and team building hang in the balance.

Pressure is building in Minnesota after the Vikings' offseason additions. The pressure is centering around the coach with which the team opted to build around this offseason, head coach Kevin O'Connell.

Minnesota enters the 2026 NFL draft without a general manager. With that, many of the team's draft choices will reflect on O'Connell's decision making. If the draft fails as a whole, the Vikings head coach may be the one that takes the blame.

Heavy's Eric Anderson discussed the ramifications of the Vikings' offseason and upcoming 2026 NFL season for O'Connell and the franchise. Here's what Anderson had to say about the team's immediate future.

"The Vikings brought in Kyler Murray this offseason, but the long-term conversation still centers on J.J. McCarthy and how O’Connell wants to handle the room. Minnesota has made it clear competition is part of the plan, and that puts O’Connell squarely at the center of one of the NFL’s more closely watched quarterback situations entering the summer. ...

The draft is part of that too. Even if the Vikings do not use an early pick on a quarterback, this weekend is still about building the team around O’Connell’s vision. Every offensive addition will be viewed through the lens of how it helps the quarterback room. Every roster move on the other side of the ball will reflect how Minnesota wants to support a team that still expects to compete.

That is why O’Connell remains one of the franchise’s most important figures this week. The rookie-card clip is fun on the surface, but it also arrives as the coach helps guide the Vikings through one of the defining points of their offseason."

In signing Kyler Murray and entering the draft without a general manager, the Vikings have implicitly indicated to O'Connell that this is his team. That may not be what they are saying directly, but it certainly could be inferred.

The Vikings have had some success with O'Connell at the helm, particularly on the offensive side of the football. That is, prior to the 2025 season. O'Connell and company did not fare well with Top 10 NFL draft pick and quarterback J.J. McCarthy. And while the organization wants the draft pick to succeed, the Vikings' head coach did not stand on the table to prevent the team from adding Murray.

Minnesota needs a big season in 2026, but perhaps nobody needs a good season more than O'Connell. It all starts with the NFL draft.
