Viking's QB future is uncertain. Seifert reveals insider buzz suggests a major shift, potentially impacting J.J. McCarthy's role.

J.J. McCarthy has been one of the stories of Super Bowl weekend. That much is probably a surprise to anyone who watched the Minnesota Vikings quarterback this season. He's a big story because of what fellow teammates are saying in interviews and the speculation that has come with it.

McCarthy, of course, replaced one of the two starting quarterbacks in this year's Super Bowl. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold was not retained by the Vikings after an incredible season for the team last season. Now, with a new GM and the discussion of what a blunder it was to let Darnold go, many are sounding off on potential changes at quarterback next season.

Vikings insider Kevin Seifert of ESPN made his thoughts on McCarthy known based on recent developments. Seifert wrote the following.

"The best way to put this, based on what sources have said, is that all bets are off. The general manager who drafted McCarthy No. 10 in 2024 has been fired, and the coach who was in full agreement with that decision is now under considerably more scrutiny.

In the big picture, McCarthy is a talented player who just turned 23 and has a total of 10 NFL starts. Few NFL teams would give up on a quarterback with that profile, and many team builders are particularly enamored with optimizing a quarterback's rookie contract. Adofo-Mensah was one of them, but his departure is a reminder of the range of outcomes that approach can lead to.

If anything, these events increase the chances that the Vikings will take a big swing at finding a veteran quarterback who could start in 2026. The only thing more damaging than making the mistakes the Vikings made last season would be to repeat them this year."

The expectation for most is that the Vikings will pursue a free agent or trade candidate quarterback who is capable of not only starting but playing effective football at the position. Whether or not the team executes that play may not be the expectation for everyone, but it's presumed that they are going to do their best.

What is important to note is that the pursuit or the addition of a quality starting quarterback is not the end of McCarthy's NFL career or perhaps even the end of his time in Minnesota. Not being ready for the league now does not mean he never will be ready. That said, it seems clear the team will need to find a quarterback to maximize the current roster. Until that happens, it will be difficult to keep faith in the Vikings on the field.
