The higher-ups can say whatever they want, but there is no competition.
Look, the Minnesota Vikings head coach and general manager have said all the right things about the sticky situation at quarterback. Signing Kyler Murray after the season J.J. McCarthy just had is a huge signal. Kevin O'Connell said this is a true competition, but that is all lip service. It's smart on the part of the Vikings head coach to not alienate anyone in this competition since anything can happen, but the Vikings aren't fooling anyone.
Let's be clear, if Kyler Murray isn't starting Week 1 (unless an injury occurs), this team is in disarray beyond repair. Why else would the Vikings sign a former Pro Bowler to an incentivized contract before a real look at free agency? Somehow, the team won nine games last season. That's the floor with Murray as the offense consistently sputtered.
The Vikings spent significant draft capital on the former Michigan quarterback. However, the team can't waste this win-now roster on a question mark at the most important position. To be fair, Murray isn't someone with a proven track record that can lead teams. Unfortunately, his legacy is tied to injuries, fast starts and slow finishes, and unfulfilled potential.
Still, the Vikings aren't holding a competition and Murray is the Week 1 starter. The idea of McCarthy beating him out is grim. Making sure you cover all your bases by saying the right things to the media is the right move, but the Vikings aren't fooling anyone.
This is such a make-or-break year for this regime. Wins need to be piled up. This is a results driven business and the Vikings are on borrowed time. Still, no permanent GM and a team looking to bounce back.
Kyler Murray is the starter. Don't let the Vikings fool you, even if they are hedging their bets with their public comments.
