Explosive linebacker Eric Wilson returns, boosting Minnesota's defense with elite stats. This signing reshapes the Vikings' immediate future and defensive strategy.

The Minnesota Vikings got a huge signing on the board on Monday morning. Star linebacker Eric Wilson is back for another season after inking a three-year deal to return to the team for the 2026 season and much more than that.

Some might have mistaken the Vikings' quiet start to the offseason as lackadaisical or without a plan for the immediate future. Even so, they contradicted that narrative adding a big-name player to shore up their defensive needs.

Andrew Harbaugh of Vikings Wire discussed what Wilson brings to the team in his return for the 2026 season.

"The team agreed to terms with linebacker Eric Wilson early Monday morning to bring back the breakout linebacker. NFL Media's Mike Garafolo reported they agreed on a 3-year, $22.5 million deal, which significantly increases his pay over previous seasons. It was earned by Wilson after taking over as a bigger impact player in the middle of the Vikings' defense.

During his breakout season with the Vikings, Wilson gathered up 115 combined tackles, 17 tackles for a loss, four forced fumbles, and 6.5 sacks. And to push the agenda even further for him to earn this deal, Next Gen Stats gave more reasons:

6.5 sacks, 40 pressures (both most among traditional LB)

4.4 yds/target allowed in coverage (2nd-fewest in NFL, minimum 250 coverage snaps)

20 run stuffs (T-3rd most in NFL, run stuff: tackles of 0 or neg yards)

Only LB with 40+ QB pressures and 20+ run stuffs in a season since 2020."

Certainly, it is optimal to return as many of your best players from a season prior. That said, Wilson was more than the best on his team at his position. Harbaugh notes that Wilson is among the best and the only player at his position to achieve a handful of milestones in a couple of categories from the 2025 season. Those stats highlight just how good Wilson is and how important his contributions will be when the Vikings take the field.

There are still more moves to be made. The Vikings have a handful of needs still to be addressed due to free agency and the loss of retiring star safety Harrison Smith. The pending quarterback decision could hold up how quickly the Vikings make many more signings, but the priority with the defense was clear: Minnesota needed to sign Eric Wilson as quickly as possible. They got it done on Monday.
