As 2027 free agency looms, three key Vikings face uncertain futures. Can Minnesota retain its stars or will they seek greener pastures?

While not new, free agency is one of the best things that has happened to the NFL. It not only allows teams to acquire talent in a way other than the NFL draft, but also allows players to find a new place to play rather than stay obligated to the franchise that drafted them.

The Vikings enjoyed the good of free agency in signing star quarterback Kyler Murray. They could see the other side of it next offseason.

ESPN's Matt Bowen listed the top expected free agents from the 2027 free agent class. Bowen noted three Vikings players in danger of playing elsewhere with the following descriptions of those players.

"Kyler Murray: If Murray wins the starting job in Minnesota over J.J. McCarthy, there is major opportunity here for him in coach Kevin O'Connell's system. With a game plan built around Murray's dual-threat ability (five seasons of 400-plus rushing yards), defined throws and play-action shots, he could cash in after his one-year deal is up.

T.J. Hockenson: A knee injury in 2024 cut Hockenson's season short, and sub-par QB play in 2025 reduced his total production. At his best, Hockenson should be viewed as a rugged, three-down tight end who can win in the middle of the field or on seams and corner routes. He had a career-best 95 receptions in 2023.

Andrew Van Ginkel: After 11.5 sacks in 2024, Van Ginkel recorded 7.5 in 12 games last season. His skill set fits best in a defense that schemes one-on-one matchups and stunts for him off the edges as an outside linebacker."

Obviously, all three players have been productive through the early going of their NFL careers. The Vikings will have to move fast before next year's free agency if they want to bring them back.

The pending moves provide some clarity as to why the Vikings might be hesitant to make many more moves this offseason. The team is trying to protect against hurting its 2027 cap while still maintaining a good team in the present. It's not an easy task.

Minnesota wants to make sure it has all of the impact players stay beyond this season, but some players might have to leave. Of the three, Murray and Van Ginkel seem to be most important to retain, though Hockenson will undoubtedly stand to see his numbers increase with Murray in 2026.

There's plenty to sort out between now and the 2027 offseason. That said, there are a few big-name players the Vikings will need to keep in mind as they look to the future.
