The Vikings' next GM hire could define Kevin O'Connell's tenure. Discover why this critical decision shapes the franchise's future.
There are a handful of pivotal moments that define a head coaching tenure at any level of football. Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell has had a few of those moments on the field.
One decision that could shape the rest of O'Connell's tenure on the field is the Vikings' upcoming general manager hire. With it comes limitless implications for the franchise for the long-term and in the near future.
Chris Schad of Zone Coverage contends making the wrong hire would be a "costly mistake." Schad explained why the next general manager hire is so important.
"Minnesota isn’t going to make this hire immediately, but the seeds are being planted. Interim GM Rob Brzezinski is highly regarded in NFL circles for his work as executive vice president of football operations. Some, including agent Blake Baratz, have vouched for him to become the full-time general manager after the draft.
Brzezinski is qualified to take over the GM role, but there are some flaws. First, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported that the Vikings would look for 'an older-school type with a strong scouting background' and 'someone rooted in traditional evaluation and personnel building.' While the salary cap background has some personnel qualities, Brzezinski hasn’t been as active in scouting, at least to the public’s knowledge.
As a result, most of the results of this offseason will be tied to O’Connell. If the Vikings find the right quarterback, O’Connell will be 'The QB Whisperer' again. If they get some talent along the defensive line, it will be O’Connell and Brian Flores who made it happen."

Yannick Peterhans-USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesThe trust that the Vikings have placed in O'Connell's expertise is warranted. Building around the coach is the right move. Albeit it does place pressure on making the right decision this time. While O'Connell and defensive coordinator Brian Flores will get the credit for success, it's not difficult to figure out where the blame will go if the team loses.
Minnesota is planning to build O'Connell's way it appears. Presumably most of the moves made moving forward will have his stamp of approval, so we'll probably see where he stands on McCarthy at quarterback.
The Vikings have an exciting opportunity ahead to shape the team around the vision of their head coach. They have the chance to build a contender on the foundation of an already 9-8 football team. We'll see if Minnesota takes advantage of the opportunity in 2026.
