What did Nolan Teasley say about the former first-round pick?
The Minnesota Vikings are using this week to prepare for the season opener against the Green Bay Packers. With the starting quarterback and 53-man roster basically set, all eyes turn to the field as the Vikings are looking to make noise in a stacked NFC North division. No more questions remain about who the starter will be, which is Kyler Murray, but there are plenty of questions about J.J. McCarthy and his role as a Viking.
Initially, the Vikings carried four quarterbacks, including Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer. Brosmer was released and rejoined the Vikings as a member of the practice squad. While speculation grows about a potential trade of McCarthy, for now, it seems the Vikings are fine with holding on to the former Michigan quarterback.
New Vikings GM Nolan Teasley stepped to the podium and offered updates on various players and situations, but his comments about McCarthy and how he fits into the current plans for the Vikings were interesting.
"I wouldn't really necessarily comment on depth immediately, but I'm pleased that he's part of the present version of the Minnesota Vikings and excited about his future," Teasley said.
The "present" version of the Minnesota Vikings is doing the heavy lifting here. While it is wise to not speak in absolutes; it's clear the Vikings are open to moving McCarthy and bringing back Brosmer to the practice squad is the insurance as the third emergency QB.
Now, when asked about McCarthy's role for Week 1, Teasley side stepped that question and said he expects McCarthy to be on the roster in a week, but didn't declare McCarthy as the second active quarterback on gameday. My educated guess would be Wentz is the backup against Green Bay and although McCarthy has practiced in full for two consecutive practice sessions, will end up inactive.
During Wentz's time as the starter, the offense didn't exactly come alive, but it was far more consistent. In all likelihood, the deal with Wentz meant he would be the backup as he reaches the twilight of his career and as a mentor for Murray since he's been in this position before.
You wonder how long McCarthy will remain in Minnesota, but it's doubtful a deal is near so early in the season. The trade deadline may tell a different story for teams looking to buy low on McCarthy or looking to him to help a team in a playoff chase.
