With Minnesota sitting undefeated, analysts suggest a blockbuster trade for a Pro Bowl quarterback could turn their championship-caliber defense into a definitive Super Bowl favorite.
The Minnesota Vikings are on the precipice of what could be special season. They're fully in a special season so far.
The Vikings are 5-0 heading into a Week 7 game against the Indianapolis Colts following the bye week. Still, some view this opportunity as one they cannot afford to squander.
In other words, if they make the postseason, they need to equip themselves to make a run. To do that, they may need to make additions in the trade market before the NFL's trade deadline. For that to happen, they may need to make moves that not every agrees with.
CBS Sports' Brian DeArdo discussed one such move. He shared why the Vikings might make a trade for a quarterback of Herbert's caliber. Here's some of what he added on why the trade might make some sense for the Vikings.
"It's clear that the Vikings have a championship-caliber defense (they're currently No. 1 in the NFL in fewest points allowed) but need help on offense. Herbert, in theory, could help the Vikings bridge that gap while becoming a surefire Super Bowl contender.
While this season has been a mess so far, Herbert was without a doubt one of the league's best quarterbacks during his first six seasons. He threw for the second-most passing yards in league history during a player's first six seasons — only Peyton Manning threw for more yards. Herbert's 163 touchdowns was the sixth-most in league history for a player in that span.
Herbert is prolific, and he has gotten better (prior to this season) in terms of taking care of the ball. ...
Looking at the Vikings this season, Herbert would be given the keys to an offense that certainly has potential. He'd get a chance to work with All-Pro wideout Justin Jefferson, two-time Pro Bowler tight end T.J. Hockenson, and ageless wonder Aaron Jones, whose skill set is similar to former Chargers teammate Austin Ekeler."

And he may have a point.
For all the questions over Murray, Herbert has failed in the postseason to virtually the same degree. He's led the Chargers to an 0-6 record in 2026. Murray has multiple wins as a Vikings starter already including an 80% completion rate against the New Orleans Saints in his most recent game.
Despite reasonable objections some might have it will be interesting to monitor what the Vikings decide to do. They will hope to solidify their roster before mid-November's trade deadline.
