Vikings eye explosive tight end Sadiq. Will they prioritize a game-changing playmaker over immediate defensive and offensive line needs?

Not long from now, the Minnesota Vikings will aim to improve their franchise with a first round draft pick. Where they go with the pick is anyone's guess.

The Vikings have several needs to fill entering the draft with center, safety, defensive tackle and a third wide receiver high on the list of potential additions. One could argue those needs are pressing and urgent. Still, some are convinced Minnesota could go after a player not at one of the above four positions to forego addressing those needs in the first round.

Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq is a name that continues to surface among possible first round choices. And while the Vikings already have a star tight end in T.J. Hockenson, there's reason to believe Sadiq could be part of the team's plans at the position.

Trevor Ripley of Zone Coverage discussed why the Vikings might target Sadiq.

"It’s no coincidence that he’s been the player most mocked to the Vikings at this point, and absolutely no one would be stunned if he ends up being the pick. But if there’s an opportunity to grab a potential blue-chip prospect, the Vikings might have a hard time passing on Sadiq.

While T.J. Hockenson holds down the starting spot for now, the Oregon product could see some action in 2026 in two-tight-end sets and three-wide-receiver sets, thanks to his 4.3-40 speed and ability to slide outside. After breaking darn near every combine record for tight ends, Sadiq would bring an explosiveness to Minnesota’s passing game that disappeared with Jalen Nailor’s departure. Sadiq was also the only first-round player to have had a top-30 visit with the Vikings, and each of Minnesota’s last four first-round selections were all brought in on one, which could be everything — or nothing."

Ultimately, the success of the Vikings' franchise comes down to several components, but none are more important than new starting quarterback Kyler Murray. if Murray succeeds right away, Minnesota answers the team's biggest question of the last several years in how to find a championship caliber quarterback. If you know Murray's game, you know tight end is an important position for the former Cardinals signal caller.

Former Murray teammate Trey McBride is the second-highest paid tight end in the NFL for a reason. Murray finds his tight ends. Through four NFL seasons, McBride has amassed 347 receptions, 3,475 yards and 17 touchdowns.

So, what value does drafting Sadiq bring? It gives Murray perhaps the best tight end in the 2026 NFL draft. The Vikings will decide if having a weapon at that position and of that caliber is worth drafting Sadiq ahead of its pressing needs.
