The Vikings coach told Kyler Murray something very interesting regarding his future

The worst-kept secret in Minnesota was the Vikings' plan to add a veteran quarterback to compete with J.J. McCarthy. Kirk Cousins, Tua Tagovailoa, Malik Willis, and others were connected to the Vikings, but the release of Kyler Murray by Arizona made the addition of the former first-round pick a no-brainer.

Murray signed a one-year deal with Minnesota with a chance to hit free agency next offseason for a bigger contract. The former Cardinals quarterback has a great chance to start in 2026 over McCarthy, but are the Vikings done with the former Michigan quarterback?

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated shared what he was told about what Murray was told by Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell.

"And while Murray still has to win the job from McCarthy, what O’Connell said to Murray did stick with him—that he was the one guy on the market that they could see as a potential longer-range answer, rather than a one-year Band-Aid. The idea of growing with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Christian Darrisaw, and O’Connell and his staff was already wildly attractive to begin with. The chance to, perhaps, put down roots only made it more so."

Joe Nelson of Sports Illustrated believes the Vikings value their draft capital after missing on many draft choices.

"O'Connell's alleged comment could also be viewed as an admission that the Vikings value their draft picks too much to justify trading them to the 49ers for Jones. San Francisco is reportedly asking for the moon to part with the former first-round pick who went 5-3 in eight games as a starter last season. The Vikings have whiffed on a lot of draft picks over the last four years, meaning they need to hit this year and next year to infuse the roster with young, talented players on rookie contracts."

The idea of signing Murray is to revive his career and see if you can catch lightning in a bottle and acquire a franchise quarterback for next to nothing. If 2026 is successful, the Vikings will find themselves in a bidding war for Murray's services, but that would be a good thing, as it would mean Minnesota won many games.

It does feel like McCarthy is on his way out, and the Vikings are dying to pivot to another option at quarterback. There will be a competition, but the smart money is on Murray to outright win the job in Minnesota.
