GM Adofo-Mensah reveals McCarthy's growth potential, comparing him to Superman. A veteran QB could provide competition, but the Vikings are invested in his development.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy has had a roller coaster of a season and perhaps through no fault of his own. In the process, he's caught plenty of strays as he navigates his first season as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

His front office understands that his play has not been perfect, but it appears that they are backing him and allowing McCarthy to develop in Minnesota head coach Kevin O'Connell's system.

Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah did not hold back his thoughts on McCarthy with KFAN’s Paul Allen's radio show.

“There’s just been growth moments. A lot of young quarterbacks, when they get pressure in their face, they’re trying to bail out the back. He’s very good about getting up in the pocket either to make scrambles or make good decisions.

It’s about being Clark Kent [and] Superman. I think that we’re seeing him put the cape on a couple times, three times, four times a game — but also do the Clark Kent things, the boring things that really just matriculate offensive football down the field. So those are the things that I’m really excited to see. And then just the preparation, showing up a week of practice, getting the game plan, doing all those great things. Being there for his team is really exciting to see.”

Newsweek's Max Dible shared his analysis of the quote. You can find the rest of his thoughts here. Here's an excerpt of what Dible had to say about the Adofo-Mensah's assessment of McCarthy.

"Minnesota is likely to bring in a veteran QB as insurance against more McCarthy injuries in 2026. The Vikings could potentially even make a move for an established signal-caller of some type who can compete with McCarthy for the long-term starting job.

But it is fairly clear from Adofo-Mensah’s commentary on McCarthy that the Vikings intend to give him a legitimate chance to retain the QB1 role and continue his development through Year 3 of his professional career."

The biggest uncertainty in Minnesota is who will start at quarterback in 2026. Certainly, the Vikings are invested in McCarthy becoming the franchise quarterback of the future and would love to develop him into a quarterback who quarterbacks the team for the next decade. Whether or not that means he starts in '26 or watches and learns from a veteran to compete for postseason contention is still to be seen.

The Vikings want McCarthy to succeed, but they also cannot afford to squander the prime years of wide receiver Justin Jefferson. So, do they go with McCarthy another year or find a quarterback like Sam Darnold to try to win it all in 2026? Then again, there's no guarantee a quarterback like Darnold would be enough to compete for a title and could come with risks.

It could be argued that starting another quarterback pushes the McCarthy project down the road as his game experience would be pushed further.

Minnesota has decisions to make. They will look to analyze what is their best next move over the final couple weeks of the season.
