Justin Jefferson by some metrics had his worst season. He’s still viewed as a top ten talent in the league. How dangerous will he be with serviceable QB play?
Justin Jefferson cracked the top ten of the CBS NFL players list. No surprise there in itself. But it was even more impressive that he ranked 8th after a down year by his lofty standards, largely due to uneven quarterback play. He posted career lows in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, and still looked dominant in stretches.
Numbers that would be a career ceiling for many of the league's receivers are Jefferson's floor. After all, he still posted over 1000 yards receiving and over 80 catches. Playing across from a developing Jordan Addison should ideally make it more difficult for defenses to roll coverage Jefferson's way. They also still have T.J. Hockenson as a threat working between the numbers. While Aaron Jones has a great deal of miles on him running the football, the one-two punch with Jordan Mason is serviceable. They should be able to move the chains a respectable amount. Should Kyler Murray be named the starting quarterback, he's shown he can take off and rack up 800+ yards on the ground from the QB spot.
J.J. McCarthy posted an underwhelming 11 touchdowns to 12 interceptions when he wasn't out injured. Backup Carson Wentz posted a team-best passer rating north of 85. Murray has been brought in to compete for the job bringing multiple Pro Bowl appearances with him. Should McCarthy beat him out for the job, it would be an indicator that the 2024 draft pick has taken a leap and earned the right to be QB1. Even Peyton Manning led the league in interceptions as a rookie, McCarthy's poor play was highlighted even more however, because they chose him over Super Bowl champion Sam Darnold to have the keys to their franchise. A year later, he's in a position battle after struggling mightily all season. The Vikings will have a frustrated number-one receiver on their hands if they can't get him the ball, as seen in Philadelphia, where A.J. Brown just forced his way off the team.
On the other side of the ball, the Vikings have assistant coach of the year, Brian Flores. His defense ranked 3rd in yards, 7th in scoring, as the Vikes leaned on this unit to post a 9-8 record. If the Vikings' starting Quarterback can protect the football, it could allow the defense to really eat and guide the team right back to the playoffs. Especially with their huge receiving talent in Jefferson on the perimeter.
