As the world turns in the land of quarterbacks and the possible additions for the Minnesota Vikings, a new name has emerged. Funny enough, the Vikings brass is in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, and the Indianapolis Colts have granted quarterback Anthony Richardson the opportunity to look for a trade. The combine is the perfect chance to speak with teams and their higher-ups about their draft aspirations and roster.
NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe reports that the Vikings and Richardson have mutual interest.
For Indianapolis, this is a ringing endorsement for Daniel Jones and his future as the Colts quarterback. As far as Minnesota goes, the trade compensation for Richardson would likely be a late-round pick in the NFL Draft. For a player with the physical gifts of Richardson (he broke a bunch of combine records), the roll of the dice is well worth it. J.J. McCarthy and Richardson can compete in training camp, and given how well quarterbacks have performed under Kevin O'Connell, the former Florida quarterback has a chance to revive his career.
While it is only a report and speculation, there is a video floating around of O'Connell speaking with Richardson following a game, and the Vikings head coach gave the quarterback encouraging words and advice.
The admiration is clear. The Vikings can roll the dice with Richardson for little to no risk, but there still is the potential that neither McCarthy nor Richardson is the answer at quarterback in 2026. Bringing in a veteran with a much more proven track record will instill confidence that someone can lead the team, but that is a very safe move.
Minnesota has shown itself to take chances on talented quarterbacks who have yet to piece their career together, such as Sam Darnold and even Daniel Jones when he became available on waivers. Darnold won 14 games, then a Super Bowl, and Jones was very good early in the season for Indianapolis before a fibula and Achilles injury ended his season.
The interesting discussion is the risk/reward factor. The Vikings are a win-now team and need a successful season, given the turmoil around the team. If O'Connell can get his hands on Richardson and cash in on his potential, it will be his finest work in the NFL. The ceiling to the offense rises significantly with Richardson's strong arm and rushing ability.
Play it safe or swing for the fences? You're up, Minnesota Vikings.
