With key starters sidelined, the Vikings must lean on their superstar playmaker to anchor a depleted offense and navigate a potential shootout against Chicago’s explosive attack.

Jefferson can take over games and completely break them open with his ability to make plays as a receiver. That’s what makes him arguably the best player in the league at his position. But the Minnesota Vikings are going to be asking even more of him than usual this week.

Kyler Murray has been ruled out against the Chicago Bears as he continues through concussion protocol, meaning Carson Wentz will get the start under center. Jordan Mason was also placed on injured reserve this week with a thumb injury, and Minnesota will be without another offensive weapon in Jauan Jennings, who has been ruled out for personal reasons.

With a backup quarterback, less running back depth and one fewer proven receiver available, even more pressure falls on Jefferson.

He’s always going to be the focal point of Minnesota’s offense, but this feels like a week where the Vikings could need something close to a spectacular performance from their superstar. That’s exactly what Jefferson is capable of providing.

He showed it again in Week 1, finishing with eight receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns as Minnesota came back to beat Green Bay. Wentz clearly wasn’t afraid to lean on Jefferson after entering the game, and that connection could become even more important against Chicago.

The Bears are coming off an explosive offensive performance of their own, meaning there’s at least a possibility Minnesota will need to put up points and play something closer to a shootout.

That doesn’t mean Jefferson needs 20 receptions and 200 yards for the Vikings to win. His impact goes well beyond the box score.

Minnesota needs him making contested catches, moving the chains on third-and-short and third-and-medium situations, creating opportunities in the red zone and simply making the right plays at the right time.

His presence also changes the way defenses have to operate. If Chicago devotes additional attention to Jefferson, it can create easier opportunities for everyone else on the field. But with so many other offensive pieces unavailable, the Vikings don’t have the luxury of Jefferson having an average afternoon.

This is one of those weeks where Minnesota is going to lean heavily on its superstar, and Jefferson has spent his career proving he’s more than capable of carrying that weight. Especially in a week of preparation in which the opponent can scheme against a player like Jefferson, a big performance would prove his caliber in the league.
