The Minnesota Vikings (9-8) had issues in the 2025 season. Perhaps their issues drew more publicity than the average winning team would command.
The most significant problems center around starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy whose struggles caused a significant drop off at the position from Sam Darnold's production a season before. Yet the rest of the offense certainly deserves some blame for the team's 2025 struggles.
The offensive line entered the spotlight in recent days with the expired contract of offensive line coach Chris Kuper. The decision not to retain Kuper did not receive much pushback.
Alec Lewis of "The Athletic" discussed why the Vikings are making changes at offensive line coach.
"Perhaps you missed this weekend’s news regarding offensive line coach Chris Kuper. His contract expired at the end of the season, and the Vikings did not retain him. This is an actionable way for head coach Kevin O’Connell and the organization to show that they understand the offensive line must improve.
The unit has been a constant source of internal frustration, which has resulted in a great deal of fiddling with personnel. The Vikings have used two premium draft picks on guards (Ed Ingram and Donovan Jackson). They’ve made trades (Ezra Cleveland and Cam Robinson). Last offseason, Minnesota spent a boatload of money on a new center (Ryan Kelly) and a new right guard (Will Fries).
The most recent iteration of the Vikings’ attempt at sustainability up front failed, as it has before, especially in pass protection."
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell looks on in the second quarter against the Detroit Lions at U.S. Bank Stadium. Matt Krohn-Imagn ImagesIt may not be possible for a team to be good with either a poor offensive line or quarterback. Just lacking in one of the two categories can be catastrophic. Moreover, you certainly can't be deficient in both places and expect great results. For that reason, it was important for the Vikings to address that deficiency in the offseason.
It's no secret to those who follow the team closely that Minnesota was one of the worst offensive lines in the league this year. Their failings were well documented, regardless of how McCarthy's struggles added pressure to the unit. It goes without saying you can't be in the bottom five in sacks allowed, pressure rate allowed and quick pressure rate allowed and make the case that an offensive line is doing its job.
The Vikings improved at one offensive line spot with the addition of 2025 rookie Donovan Jackson. They will look to continue to make improvement this offseason.
