After J.J. McCarthy’s 2025 struggles, Kyler Murray steps into Kevin O’Connell’s proven scheme, poised to revive Minnesota's explosive offense and lead a high-stakes charge toward the playoffs.
For the last couple of decades, the term "quarterback friendly" has been popular in the National Football League. The term, of course, refers to an offense that facilitates success for the team's signal caller rather than making it unnecessarily difficult.
Prior to the 2025 season, the Minnesota Vikings offensive system that head coach Kevin O'Connell employs was considered a quarterback friendly scheme. The largely fool proof system that had seen several quarterbacks enjoy great success made last year's struggles from quarterback J.J. McCarthy alarming. It caused the Vikings to look in a different direction at the position.
Enter new Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray, who steps in after having accomplished four 3,700 yard passing seasons in seven years. The other three seasons, he failed to reach that mark in large part due to multi-game injuries.
Glenn Kaplan of Gridiron Heroics contends that Murray is not only a shoe in to win the starting job, but that he enters the perfect quarterback system for success. Here's what Kaplan opined about the addition.
"The Minnesota Vikings needed a major upgrade at the quarterback position this offseason because J.J. McCarthy was not reliable in 2025. The Arizona Cardinals released quarterback Kyler Murray this offseason instead of trading him elsewhere. Minnesota decided to pounce and sign him. It appears as if the Vikings will have a quarterback competition between Murray and McCarthy, but everyone knows that Kyler is going to win the starting job.
He will be an upgrade over McCarthy. The Vikings fumbled the bag when they decided not to re-sign Sam Darnold in the previous offseason. Darnold won a Super Bowl title with the Seattle Seahawks. Minnesota finished with a 9-8 record last season."

The Vikings offense has been explosive for a long time under his leadership. Whether or not it was the offensive line, poor playmaking at running back or the inconsistency of McCarthy that caused the Vikings to fail to reach their ceiling is up for debate. But it was not McCarthy who hurt the team's chances.
The Vikings are set for another offensive explosion in the 2026 season. Primed with new playmakers and a capable quarterback, look for the team to make its mark on the season and contend for the playoffs again with Murray at the reins.
