Justin Jefferson reacts to a loaded quarterback room, anticipating competition's spark and challenging J.J. McCarthy to elevate his game for the 2026 season.
The Minnesota Vikings have one of the more interesting quarterback situations in the NFL. In the position group are three quarterbacks that saw their names drafted in the Top 10 of the NFL draft in Kyler Murray, Carson Wentz and J.J. McCarthy.
The latter two have had success in the NFL. Murray has posted four 3,700-yard passing seasons while Wentz broke out as an NFL MVP candidate in 2017. The same cannot be said for McCarthy, Minnesota's own draft pick who has not yet panned out in the league.
Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson has been taking it all in as the Vikings re-signed Wentz and added Murray this offseason. Jefferson has never seemed afraid of acknowledging the elephant in the room. It appears the media is well acquainted with that fact, too.
Jefferson was asked about the new look quarterback room. Here's what he had to say about adding Murray and what it could mean for McCarthy in 2026.
“My first reaction was just, it’s really good to get some talent in the room, to give a little spark in that room, to see a competitive edge and for those guys to really lock in and do what we’re expecting them to do, which is to come in and be that guy.
I’m definitely looking for those big, exciting plays. I’m looking forward to his speed, his quickness, and his arm strength, which he has shown countless times over the years. For J.J., for somebody to enter that room with that type of ability and talent, he has to step it up a little bit.
It is good for him to feel that type of pressure and really lock in and say it is either now or I’m going to take that back seat again; it is all about a competitive mindset in these types of situations. It comes down to who is ready for that moment and who is ready to step up and take that initiative.”

Rebilas-Imagn ImagesCompetition necessarily sharpens a quarterback room, as the best player typically wins the job. Those afraid of the competition usually rule themselves out of it. That said, competition will be especially helpful for the Vikings in finding a quality starter for the 2026 season.
Presumably, Murray will be that starter not only this year but afterward. The 2026 season will reveal where the Vikings will go at quarterback for the near future.
