Justin Jefferson is one of the best, if not the best, wide receivers in the NFL. His Minnesota Vikings know what they have in the player. Now they need to build around him.
The urgency of building around the talented player was heightened after a 9-8 season in which the offense, some might even say the quarterback specifically, was the main culprit. However, recent news has increased the urgency of making moves to facilitate Jefferson's greatness being on full display.
Per reports, the Vikings are working with Jefferson to restructure his contract. They are doing so to create cap space. Ben Goessling of The Minnesota Star Tribune shared what the team could accomplish with the restructure.
"The Vikings, who need to clear more than $40 million to get under the NFL salary cap by March 11, took a step toward that goal with three of the simplest moves they could make.
They restructured the contracts of wide receiver Justin Jefferson, left tackle Christian Darrisaw and cornerback Byron Murphy Jr., according to a source with knowledge of the situation, converting a portion of the players’ base salaries to signing bonuses that would hit the cap in future years. The Vikings could defer up to $18 million in such a move with Jefferson, as much as $9.24 million with Darrisaw and up to $11.3 million for Murphy."

Certainly, he wants to be adequately valued by his team, but more than simply chasing that Jefferson wants to win. A restructured contract would just be another example of that fact.
All of that said, the wide receiver probably does not want to restructure his contract only for the team make lackluster moves or no moves at all. It's reasonable to expect the wide receiver wants to see a return on his investment into the team.
Jefferson is not the only player mentioned either. Left tackle Christian Darrisaw and cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. are also among the players said to be restructuring their contracts.
With players invested in the Vikings' 2026 prospects, the front office will need to uphold its end of the deal with impact additions this offseason. In particular, adding an impact quarterback like former Arizona Cardinals signal caller Kyler Murray or San Francisco 49ers backup Mac Jones rather than a second-tier free agent at the position.
We'll see what the restructures can open up for the Vikings over the next couple of months.
