Football is a funny sport sometimes.

The Minnesota Vikings are 4-0. Teams who begin with four straight wins are for the most part ticketed for a playoff berth. In fact, going back to last season, the Vikings have won nine consecutive football games. The final four were with the recently departed J.J. McCarthy under center. An even funnier stat is McCarthy is tied with Patrick Mahomes and Brock Purdy for the most consecutive wins as a starter with four. You couldn't make that up if you tried.

Still, in the NFL, they don't ask how, but how many and right now the Vikings are off to the best start imaginable. I don't think it's a stretch that the Vikings have jumped out to this great start in the strangest way. Kyler Murray went down in the early parts of Week 1. Carson Wentz won two straight games, including a rain soaked victory over the Bears. Caleb Williams departed that game with a hamstring injury.

The most head-scratching stat is that the Vikings offense has been LESS efficient under Murray and Wentz than McCarthy was last season through four games. On the flip side, the Vikings' defense and Brian Flores have been magnificent. Dallas Turner has flipped the switch, and Flores has pushed every right button with his defensive play calls.

Kicker Will Reichard has 35 points this season. The offense has scored six touchdowns in four games. In the last 32 drives, the Vikings have scored one touchdown. Now, wins are wins, but this is completely unsustainable. The Vikings put up 39 in the season opener and have 47 points combined in the last three games. The defense has allowed 51 points, but hasn't faced top-flight offenses yet in 2026.

The Packers, Bucs, and Dolphins are a complete mess offensively and the Bears lost Williams during the game, but the Vikings were doing a great job bottling the offense up as they have historically under Flores. The Saints are next and have some firepower. This will be the best test for the defense so far.

The Vikings will face the Lions, 49ers, Bills, and Falcons in four of their next seven games. The defense will be tested, but if the offense doesn't come alive, those games will be harder to finish as those offenses are far more formidable. Perhaps, more continuity with Murray and the offense will help. Certainly, the return of Justin Jefferson will help this week against New Orleans.

The offense has to raise its consistency to match the all-world defense they have. This team will be very dangerous if it all clicks.
